Med surg teaches you to delegate and multi task on all levels. You float an ICU nurse into a med/surg unit and it's ugly. They have a difficult time taking care of more than 1 pt. You work med/surg and go to ICU, taking care of 1-2 pts even though more sick would be an easier transistion load wise.

Why do people always act like Med/Surg is a second rate specialty? Who says that critical care is a more desirable place to work? Personally, I have never worked critical care nor had any desire to. I find the atmosphere in ICU to be oppressive and most of the patients are too sick to interact with much, which is half the joy of being a nurse, getting to know so many new people from all walks of life.
I just got hired as a Med/Surg float nurse in a mid-sized community hospital after taking a few years' hiatus from doing the same, and I couldn't be happier. I love Med/Surg, and I don't feel like any less of a nurse for working there. It takes all kinds. What if 98% of the nurses wanted to work OB/LDP? You should be proud that you already know what you want to do, and you will learn a ton working Med/Surg because you will see all kinds of patients with a huge variety of illnesses. Good luck!
