feeling a lot of anxiety

Specialties Med-Surg

I'm in an LPN - RN bridge program, and tomorrow I start my clinicals. Although I went through clinicals during the LPN program, I am feeling a lot of anxiety. Mostly because in the time I've been an LPN (10 months) I've only worked at a pediatric clinic, with no other experience than that. Tomorrow I will be on the med-surg floor and I feel like I'm going to make a fool of myself because of my lack of knowledge; things that are probably "the basics" to other nurses are foreign to me. :uhoh21:

Do you have any advice or tips regarding med-surg? My plan is to jump in and do/learn as much as I can, and if i look like an idiot to the other nurses than so be it.. at least i'm learning.

Your plan sounds good. Relax, you won't even know everything when you graduate so don't be intimidated because you don't know everything on the first day.

no sane person expects you to know everything ...that is why you are a student. Just be prepared as best you can by knowing the diagnosis and medications that your patient is on. It will be OK. When I started I had no medical experience whatsoever. I did not even know how to give someone a bedpan.....so really just relax so you can learn as much as you can. hang in there and keep us posted :wink2:

get comfortable with anxiety, the day I entered nursing I think I automaticaly became anxious. July 31 2007 past nclex (exciting moment)!!!! 10/01/07 got a job in community health center (pediatrics) all my confidence flushed down the toilet(got fired). 11/06/07 got hired in Nursing Home, but very scared and dobted my skills as a nurse(I still work there gave my noticed Aug 11 2008. Aug 1 2008 got hired in Rehabilitation Hospital in Acute area, I will start there on Sept 8th, and I am starting to feel anxious, I wake up q 2hrs with a medical nightmare, I am so anxious that I have back pain, cold sore and I haven't even started. So you're not the only anxious, I am going to take my deep breath as much as I need. I can do it!!!! Before nursing school I never had any medical experience what so ever!!! So be confident and just be yourself!!! Good Luck

You have the right idea, just be open to ideas and learn as much as you can. That is the reason WHY you are a student, to LEARN. You are bringing experience to the table, just remember that. And remember, the other students will be there with you as well. You have to build a network of support and you will make it through. Make time for family and friends as well and remember to BREATHE.
