I was wondering if there's a big difference between surgical unit and med surg or med tele are they all considered medical surgical.

Depends where you practice. I work in an institution where every M/S bed is telemetry capable. Most surgical patients are cardiac monitored post-operatively then maybe transferred to a medical/surgical unit. M/S units have both surgical patients and medical patients that have not had any invasive procedures.

I think there is some difference in each - I would not expect telemetry to take place in a medical or surgical unit, but of course there are always exceptions. I would expect mostly diseases and conditions in medical and mostly post-ops in surgery and mostly cardiac related illnesses in tely (or history of cardiac issues). Again, might depend on MD, census, available staff, etc.

My floor is med-surg with all the postops (except cardiac surgeries) coming to our floor. At least half of our pts at any given time are on tele. Other than the postops, I'm not sure how our floor differs from the tele floor except that we don't have tele monitors. We also have a cardiac unit and CCU at my facility.
