Montgomery College, how long?

U.S.A. Maryland

Published

I sent in my application for the fall at Montgomery College today. The deadline is March 1st. Does anyone know about how long I can expect to wait before I get an answer?

Thx,

Nikki

I figure I will just get my associate's, get a job and if I want to get a BSN, I'm hoping my employer will help pay for it. From what I've seen there isn't a whole lot of difference in pay between the two and for now I'm not looking for a leading/management role. I just wonder if I'll be able to get a job given I will just have an AS/RN and my age. I'm hoping after my first year I can get a job as a nurse tech/assistant which will land me a permanent RN position upon graduation. I figure if I can prove my worth and abilities then I am more likely to obtain a job.

I really hate the waiting game. Best of luck to you both!

There are definitely pros and cons of being 30 something and up. I'm a bit concerned about being able to secure a job fresh out of nursing school and competing with the younger folks and also those who have a few yrs of exp. But I try not to let that discourage me. FYI...if you don't already know... the plan to build Holy Cross's facility (around 90 something ? beds) on MC's G'Town campus has been approved. If I remember correctly, they'll be breaking ground by 2012.

I'm in G'Burg. Would love to get together to study, etc.

Waiting has be tough. Hopefully, we'll all hear the good news very soon.

Holy cow!!!! How have I not heard of this? This is fantastic news!!!! Maybe they will be hiring by the time we graduate. It is odd however because when I went to a health sciences info session I asked if they'd be offering classes at any other campuses and was told no. It sounds like the Germantown campus will be doing so.

This article says it could break ground this fall and open in 2014.

I heard about the plan from my A & P instructor last Spring. It's very exciting news.

It'll be interesting to see just how long the whole process will take.

Don't worry about the age thing in terms of getting a job. I just heard on NPR that they're actually looking for older people to work in the medical field. I'll see if I can find a link to the story and post it here.

I loved and still love Chaka Khan, too. That brought me back. I can see her video now playing on MTV. "I feel for you...I think I love you...Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan, let me love you, Chaka Khan". Hysterical.

I live in DC with my partner, two rescue pit bulls and a one eyed cat. It's a menagerie. Feels like I'm living in an animal shelter sometimes. ;) We're planning to move to Silver Spring or Takoma Park before the semester begins so I can obtain residency. You're supposed to move 3 months prior to the start of the semester, but I don't think we'll be able to find something that soon. We've already been looking for the past month or so and it's next to impossible to find a place that is inexpensive and will take our 3 animals.

I'm in for forming a study group. I don't really have my heart set on any particular hospital, although being at Washington Hospital Center or one of the other hospitals in DC would be ideal, as we would like to move back to the city once I'm done with school. I too would like to have whichever hospital I work for help to pay for my BSN and maybe even my Master's in Nurse Anesthesia.

Okay, gotta go eat dinner. Talk to you all soon.

lil-dragon: Thanks for posting the info about why they changed their requirements for the TEAS. I'm a little relieved that it was more difficult. It makes me feel better about my overall score. I received a 78.7%.

Congrats on your 40th! My partner, Beth, turned 40 on November 20. She keeps insisting that she's an old lady now.

Hello ladies,

Are you having a nice weekend?

Monster620- I left the test feeling pretty crappy. After speaking w/ the coordinator, I felt more confident. Thanks for the congrats. I'm still trying to grasp that fact. I'd like to believe we're as young as we feel and I still feel young.

If I hear anything about available places in S.S. or Takoma area, I'll let you know.

Have a good Sunday, ladies!

Hey Lil-Dragon:

I had a great weekend. Beth and I went to Roosevelt Island. Our first time going there, even though we've lived here for many years. Sometimes when something's so close, you take it for granted. How was your weekend?

Hmmm, I didn't receive notices about the last posts. Anyhow, I stopped by to share some info I heard from a first semester nursing student.

The reason the postponed their application deadline is for the reason we assumed...not enough people qualified. I was told that they extended it rather than accepting some of those people less qualified because they don't want to lower their standards. Apparently the MC nursing program was recently beat out all the other nursing programs (not sure if that is state or countywide). So they don't want to lose that status so they can contine to be acclaimed and get funding and recognition.

I also found out, which I never knew, that after one semester in the program you are technically a CNA. After two semester and after taking a test, you are then an LPN. This is great in my opinion because I can get paid to gain experience during the summer or after my first year, once I've settled in to the program and know what to expect.

Good to know the medical industry is looking for "mature" ;-) employees. I'd like to read that article.

Everyone keeps telling me they will accept me but until I get that letter I'm not going to celebrate. The wait is killing me.

Thanks so much for the info, Neyman. That is great to hear about being able to work as a CNA/LPN for the summer. I'm keeping my finger's crossed that all of us to get in. I'll let you all know as soon as I hear something.

Be nice if they would have just sent out acceptance letters to the ones they are going to accept right away and not make them wait around while they try to fill empty slots.
