Ages of male nursing students?

Of the 23 other students comprising the group that I entered nursing school with, three of them are men. The class that is graduating at the end of next week I believe has 1 male student, and as far as I know the class immediately behind mine has 1 as well. This is about 60 students (some classes have had students drop), with 6 of them being males; that's only 1 in 10.

So we know that male nurses are few and far between, but how old are we?

The 1 student in the class graduating next week is 28.

The 1 student in the class that entered the semester after mine is at least 30 (a second career-er I believe).

Of the 4 in my class, 2 are about 45, 1 is 40, and then there is me...21.

How old are you guys? How old when you started school?

Just curious.

well i just feel silly now, im 18 ....>.>

let me get you some facts here before you go and skip this and not read it for the simple fact that im, not exactly 100% a nurse in fact.

i am just getting into the field and i will be going to a 6 week CNA course in about a month (mind you if i cant wait that long!)

my current girlfriend, which has been a CNA for almost 2 years now (and loves it and is very passionate about nursing) has drawn me into this field, keep in mind i had prior interest in my favor before she mentioned the words CNA to me.

i am 18, and i will probably be a "yung'n" at school and im fine with that, because i feel, from what has been explained and shown to me through my girlfriend and other things, that i woud be an amazing nurse because of my personality and my soft heart and my deep compassionate side towards any human being.

i will actually quote her here, after our talk about my above statement she replied with "there needs to be more nurses, like you and me in this field" (talking about gerriatrics -spelling!-) because of her frustration with some of the nurses there somewhat neglecting residents, and her being upset because she cares about them like her own family.

but enough of me blabbing here, i am extremely excited to start and i CANNOT wait its eating me alive to wait till august to start, and she just showed me this site tonight and im going insane on this reading everything i can and soaking everything in.

but i am in fact 18 and will be 19 going into my CNA course. :)

dude, you're in an envious position. i wish i was 18 again so that i could avoid the detours i took to get where i am now. when i was 18, pursuing nursing was not really regarded as something a male should be doing, and at the time i was not confident enough to break through against that popular mindset. of course, i am such a different person now.

but then again, i would not trade my life experiences so far for anything. so it was meant to be that i enter nursing at this time of my life.

I'm 30 years old and will graduate from my BSN program in August. Most of the other guys in the program are in their 20s and 30s. Two guys are over 40.

I was 27 when I started my BSN program and will be 30 when I graduate....the other guys in my program are in their 20's with one guy almost 40....Willthrash- you're lucky u know what you want to do at 18.....I still didn't know what I wanted to do with my life at 18....only knew I had to get out of the town I lived in.....so I joined the army

Well im 21 and im just finishin an undergradute degree this year, and startin my nursing degree in sept 09. kinda glad I gave myself three years though, it allowed me know wat I wanted to do.

and about that, as far as "something males shouldnt be doing" just want to add a little sidenote here, lol, that i told my gf and some of her friends, the first day i get someone giving me a hardtime about it im going to make it a point and fact to find pink, or purple (girly is what im shooting for) flowery scrubs and go shake there hand, "yes im a male nurse, and im damn well proud of it thank you :)"

that's partly my story too. when i was 18 (back in ancient times - lol ) not only did i not really have a clue as to what i wanted to do with the rest of my life, but nursing back then (late 60's & early 70's) was not even on the radar screen as a career - then it was totally considered a "women's job" - far more so than today. i was meant to do this now, after i'd gained more maturity, wisdom, and a few scars here & there in "the school of hard knocks".....

i couldnt give a **** to be honest. If I wanna be a male nurse thats a pretty respectful career for me. I havent got any real criticism about it, people give me more applaud than anything.

i started Nursing school when i was 17 and graduated BSN at 21. I am 22 now.
