San Francisco Private LPN School

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

Published

Hello friends,

I am brand new to allnurses and have a few questions about choosing a good LPN program. I am moving to the San Francisco Bay Area, specifically San Mateo, and I am looking for a private LPN program. The ones I have been looking at so far are Bay Area College of Nursing, and NCP College of Nursing. Please let me know if there are others that I have not looked at yet. Also, this might sound like a dumb question, but what is the difference between an LPN and an RN? Thank you for all your input and advise! :)

Have you checked out Gurnick at San Mateo? I am new to allnurses too and going to Gurnick at San Mateo in Fall 2011 or Spring 2012. Here is the link, check it out =)http://www.gurnick.edu/programs/vocational-nursing-program

Thank you so much! I am checking them out right now! Yay! :D

What is the course workload like in the LPN program? What are clinicals like? Do we go through the same type of units as they do in the regular RN program? What is the homework like? Is it possible for the average student to do well and work at the same time?

Also, how is it that the LPN program at the Bay Area College of Nursing is only 4 months long and the LPN program at Gurnick is 14 months long?

I am a student at Gurnick Concord Campus and love it there! Obtaining your LVN in 4 months is not possible as the State Board states that you HAVE to log 1530 hours of classroom and clinical time! Is that school even accrediated?

I like Gurnick because you can still keep your job and go to school in the morning or evening. The instructors are very educated and you really learn a lot from them. Gurnick also offers federal financial aid and NCP does not. Gurnick has a lot to offer its students and less expensive than NCP. You really will not be sorry chosing to go to Gurnick.:nurse:

As an LVN you do a lot of stuff an RN does. The only difference is that we are unable to hang or push meds through an IV line. You as an LVN assist the RN formulate the care plan for the patient and implement the care.

Best of luck to you on your decision and if you want more info on Gurnick feel free to message me.

Hey AgMPLGRL!

I also go to Gurnick Academy, but to the San Mateo campus! I just started the prereq class just a few weeks ago and I love it so far! Everyone is really helpful and friendly, and i'm learning a lot. Give it a shot! Christine2009 is right about the clock hours- there is no way to become an LPN in four months. The California state board requires 1530 for it to be valid. The financial aid available at Gurnick is also helpful, as private school bills can be hard to swallow! :) Good Luck!

Thank you so much for all the helpful replies! I am taking all of them into consideration. :)

Bay area college of nursing is 13 months. i did it. i would recommend NCP and gurnick I've heard a lot of great reviews about them. a lot of my classmates only went to BACN because of the convenient schedule. We had lots of problems with administration and it got pretty ugly. very money hungry. never saw the owner of the school even once. um, wait i think ive seen a picture of her . She never even made herself available. For the amount of money we are paying maybe an introduction to your school would have been nice! anyway, people rant and rave about NCP and gurnick. they are really tough but thats what you want.
