Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

Updated:   Published

Anyone a current or past student of PTEC LPN program?

Any info to share? What amount of "points" did you need to get in?

Thanks.

I apologize for my late reply... I would like to further explain why I, and many of my classmates are so dissatisfied with the on-line LPN class at PTEC. The #1 issue has been inconsistencies with both administration, and with the curriculum. We were told in the beginning of the program that we could miss a total of 50 hours without having to make up any time & that we would be able to make up an additional 12 hours. We were then told, a year into the program, that was a mistake & that all time missed would have to be made up. As far as the coursework, one week we may have 2 units to work through, the next we may have 17. This is no exaggeration... (Also, they made everyone go through the CORE (CNA) portion of the curriculum. Even the students with CNA certification.) Several students have complained to the instructors, administration, and to the state board of nursing.

The clinical portion of this program has been the only saving grace. :bowingpur I have learned so much from our clinical instructor, Mrs. Williams. She does her best to make up for our main instructor's ineptitude

I would again like to restate...THIS IS THE WORST EDUCATION EXPERIENCE THAT I HAVE EVER HAD!!! My dissatisfaction has nothing to do with my commitment to on-line learning.:nono: I have taken several on-line courses over the past few years. It is solely due to the incompetency of the program itself. I can only hope that PTEC puts a bit more thought into the next online course that they offer. They obviously didn't plan properly when putting the first course together.

thank you for the info! that clears up a lot for me anyway .... maybe it was a blessing that i didn't get into this august class. i'm going to give it one more shot for the january class and see what happens. any idea how many points you had when you were accepted? do you remember what your teas score was? still debating on whether or not it is worth the time, effort and money to retake it.

thanks again.

Nola...I cant really speak on behalf of the Online course, but I can certainly understand the frustration. I originally was going to try for the class you are in (March 2008 online) but decided not to because it was a pilot program. From what I have observed, I am not surprised it has been disorganized because administration gets ahead of themselves and implements things before thinking it through. I hope things will improve for incoming students in August. But hey you are almost done..YAY!!! :)

To answer flg8r's question, I would say its a mixed bag when it comes to facilities reviews. I hear positive feedback about PTEC and Galen graduates, and of course I hear negative things too. I dont hear too much about Keiser graduates. PTEC is established and has been around for a while. I have heard mixed reviews, but I work at Bayfront and a charge nurse mentioned that she feels PTEC LPNs are well trained and more prepared to enter settings than some RN graduates. How true this is, I dont know. But I can say that our clinicals are great and if it werent for all the time we spend practicing and learning hands on, I would probably be lost. Curriculum is hit & miss. I hear it is changing again and that the books being implemented in august is a MAJOR improvement from what I am using. So this is promising.

I dont know how many points I had. They actually changed the points system a bit. When I applied, points for TEAS scores they gave 1pt 70-79, 2pts 80-89, and 3pts 90+. I also got points for a 4yr degree, medical exper, and probably ethnic diversity (whatever that means).

So anyway..hope this helps.

I landed on this forum today after searching for other students who were trying to get into Ptec's fall classes..

I applied for the August daytime - St.Pete Campus class and am awaiting a response, I believe we are suppose to receive them by June 14.

I was surprised to read that the August online class only had 40 applications submitted, does anyone know how many students got accepted?

At the orientation for the August St.Pete Campus day class, there was so many people I dont even have a good estimate, but the staff said they were anticipating on accepting at least 50 students, which sounded like a lot to me. Did anyone else give the august daytime classes a shot?

I only applied for the online program. In the orientation, they said that there were 24 slots available.

onefrndlyghst ...... were you accepted into the august online program?

Yes I was.

that's great, enjoy!

if you wouldn't mind, could you keep those of us not included in this August's class abreast of things good/bad with the program?

Yes I was.

I definately will.

I am a little leary about the online program, but have a great support system in my boyfriend who is an RN and my sister who is an ARNP. So, they both will be able to help me iron out any problems that I have when I can't get an answer from the instructors.

As a current PN student at PTEC St. Petersburg, I have mostly positive views about the program. I started in August of 08' with a very large class. My two instructors are very caring and sensitive toward student needs. Like a previous poster, the school is funded with the state and budget cuts are quite evident. I've advocated for advances in simple technology, but it's something that is on hold. The program chair person has a open door policy that I really like, anything you need to discuss she is always ears.

I would like to have more clinical time incorporated into our program, but our class size is very large so it's difficult. Our instructors are very creative in incorporating things into the class setting, but the challenges are really apparent because of our large group. I checked out Galen and it just required to much money and time. PTEC is a good choice for a PN program, it's always changing as I say.

Nursing school and programs is what you make of it, so if you choose to keep a negative vibe then your experience will be negative.

I was just accepted into the Online program at PTEC and was wondering how difficult you think the program is? How much time do you find that you have to study outside of the classroom? Do you get to review patient's charts the night before clinicals? Do you feel confident with clinicals from what you've learned? Can you (or other students if you don't) work full-time while attending the program?

Thanks in advance if you can answer those questions for me!
