Personal Statement/Entrance Essay

What do you guys think about these?? I am knees deep in the middle of applying for a LVN program that start in jan. 2015, a personal statement/Entrance essay is not required but I would really like to add one... not necessary? A plus?? I am also getting two letters of recommendation; one from an RN I worked under at a hospital and the other is my current employer, a physician. DO you think these things will be a nice touch? obviously my grade and testing scores are the number one selling points but if it came down to me and another person... maybe knowing something extra about my passion/motivation/drive for nursing would get me in??? let me know what you think...
