I am new here... Just got accepted into the LVN program and will start in January:balloons: . I am so excited and like to preplan things. Could anyone give me adivce on what I should buy as far as any study guides, school supplies, or just anything that you might have found helpful in your classes, clinicals? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

When I went to nursing school, it was in a large hospital and we didn't have lockers. I had to truck my books back and forth daily. This was also before the invention of backpacks on wheels, so we had those portable luggage carriers with a plastic milk crate thingy and some bungy cords to hold it all on in order to carry the books. Now days, I would invest in a good backpack on wheels.

Don't scrimp on your stethoscope. Go for a really good quality one and expect to pay in excess of $100 for it.

Good shoes. Search past threads to find out what people recommend and go try them.

Cinnamon red hot candies for sucking on in class so you don't fall asleep. We used to pool our money and go to Sam's Club and buy tons of this and pass it around class. It was a life saver----especially during those "how to" films with the lights off!:wakeneo:

Get something decent, like a Littmann, search other postings to find the best one. For now just get a cheap Stethoscope no thrills one to practice taking vitals on friends and family. I eventually plan on getting a Classic II S.E. Stethoscope.

I just graduated in july 06 from l.p.n. school. I can tell you that in 1 yr, I used about 6,000 index cards. I put everything on flash cards, terms, meds, bones, muscles. That way I coult take my studying with me wherever I went and I needed it. I went to school or clinicals everyday from 8-3 and worked part time in evenings and weekends, so the flash cards allowed me to be able to study on breaks at work. I also used ebay as a source for any extra books that I used like care plan books. Most of which I got for less that 3.00 each and I can't tell you how much they helped me. Shoes, Shoes, Shoes, I have found since getting out of school and working 12 hr shifts that a good pair of nike tennis shoes or even those really light weight crock shoes are WONDERFUL. I have bought 4 pair of NURSING shoes and all of which hurt my feet so bad. I also never wear the same pair of shoes two days in a row at work. A bookbag on wheels is a MUST have. ! Lots of notebook paper and highligters a good trapper keeper also is a must have. stock up on really good folders for that trapper also. stock up on pencils, i personally loved lead pencils. never had to get out of my desk to sharpen my pencil. mint candy, a must have. and caffeine on all your breaks, those movies with the lights off are a killer. good luck ...pureinstinct

I was a highlight girl, myself. In fact, I still use them, sort of out of habit. Yellow and pink were my colors...

Not to hijack, but WHY to professors insist on always turning the lights off during a film?

I don't watch TV in the dark, and as soon as the lights are off, I instantly want to nod off.

UGH me too! I always find myself with my eyes slowly closing and I keep yawning, it drives me crazy! And I have this one professor who ALWAYS turns the lights out as soon as he walks in because he has "sensative eyes". I always get so sleepy in his class!
