So there it is...I made it through foley checkoff this week and two days later, we checked off on trach. I broke sterile field, lots more than once. I was shaking so badly, it wasn't even funny.

I have two weeks before I remediate and take it again. On top of that, I failed the required med test. You could only miss one and I missed two. It's been a real red - letter week. Of those of us that failed, I was the only one that didn't cry. Knowing it's your own fault has a way of doing that.:banghead:

So now that you know what you did will you learn from this and move forward to be a great nurse.

I am about to enter my 4th term of my LVN and I have had my ups and downs as well, dont get discouraged. Take a breath and crack the books, practice the skill with a friend who is watching your sterile tech like a hawk if its needed.

Remember,

You can do this!!!

While performing Trach care, talk to yourself, do not think about instructor.

For Med test make a checklist or flask cards will help you pass.

* I failed my skills checkoff too* Heres the short unabridged ( or is it abridged. I always get them messed up. whatever. heres the short story) In our school we did a lottery of skills checkoffs. You had to check off your skills individually- pass them and then for your final grade of clinicals ( which wasn't a real grade since clinicals didnt count. grade wise anyway...you had to pass 2 out of 10 skills. So you had to draw 2 skills out of a bedside commode ( tru story) Apparently it was supposed to add humor and ease our fear haha. Anyway I drew subcut injections and foley care. I failed subcut injections 2 times! I only had one more shot or I WAS OUT of THE PROGRAM! =( Nerves were shot-for sure. anyway I decided to make a little flashcard system of all my skills with illustrations. then I went home and practiced the skills over and over and over and over again. I used my waterpick for trach care..a demodose injection pad and while driving to school I had taped up all my little flashcards onto the inisde of my dash and in front of me, on the steering wheel. ( not to self- don't do that again.) The point of my story is revamp your technique on how you study for the skill. For me it was combining both my knowledge and my visuals. And when I was performing the skill instead of looking at my instructor I just told her the steps ( we had to tell her the steps before we performed the step- so for me it worked out because that is how I learned to study.) I hope this helps you some! * Don't give up! You can do it! :w00t:
