Summer Nurse Tech 2011

U.S.A. Louisiana

Has anyone worked as a nurse tech that can share your experience with those of us who are trying to secure a position. What type of tasks were you allowed to do, etc? I will graduate from an ADN program in Dec 2011 and have a 3.5, am involved in organizations, and also have a Bachelors degree. However, I'm realizing how difficult that it is to get one of these positions. I've had one interview so far and learned that I was 1 of 700 applicants, and I didn't receive an offer. Here's the kicker, I was told by the recruiter that I could volunteer for the same company and basically do the same work as the techs (free of charge). I know that I could volunteer and network and maybe learn some skills, but that will be my last resort. Sorry, didn't mean to digress, just wanted to vent a little.

If you're referring to the summer nurse internship at Ochsner, I'm in the same boat with that one. I also graduate in December because of a setback. However, that position is a nurse internship and they've always been very picky about who they take for that specific position. It's rumored you need a 4.0 for them to take you. There are several open tech jobs at that facility though, and if you have your CNA certification, just apply to those. Look at all the hospitals in the area and just apply for every tech or CNA position you see. Unfortunately, the deadline has closed for University's and EJGH's summer programs, but keep looking every day (and I mean EVERY day). Getting a tech job right now is, unfortunately, just as difficult as getting a nursing job. I'm applying everywhere! If you're on the Northshore, Regency is always looking for certified techs. I can't make that long of a drive, but thought I'd throw it out there for you.

CPKRN,

Yes, I was referring to Ochsner. I realized last week that I needed to check daily after noticing an EJGH tech position up one day and then it was gone a few days later when I went to fill out the application. They aren't even doing their regular tech program as far as I know- just certain units. I'm the the system for about 5 hospitals right now. I will look into Northshore Regency (I'm not familiar with it), so thanks for mentioning it. I would have filled out more applications in February and early March, but I was so overwhelmed with work for my class, that I put it off. Good luck to you. Let me know if you get something.:)

Is this in New Orleans? I recently applied for an ER Tech job at Ochsner in Baton Rouge. No official offer yet, but I think I may get one. I had a peer interview Friday and some of the things I was told I would get to do: stocking, vitals, sutures, chest compression for codes, catheters, etc.... I'm over the moon excited about it and really hope I get an official offer next week.

One thing I was kind of surprised about--didn't seem like a ton of "dirty" work. They have housekeeping that does most of that I guess. I"m sure some will be expected, but it seems like way more than I originally thought.

I'm in New Orleans. Good luck with getting the position. I would expect that you would get to do more skills (not just "dirty work") because they are basically recruiting for new graduate RN's through their internship. However, I'm very surprised that they would allow a student to do chest compressions for codes for legal reasons regardless of the CPR certification. Let us know if you get the position!:)

That's what I was thinking too--about the chest compressions. But I guess we shall see. I just want to learn everything I possibly can! It's not an internship, it's an actual part-time position. Not sure if that matters. I would be doing this in the capacity of an actual employee. I'll let you know, hoping to hear something Monday!

I'm in the same boat too. Applying everywhere. I'm going to look into Regency since I'm on the Northshore! Thanks for mentioning it!!

I also applied to the summer nurse tech program at Ochsner and I had two interviews. I was wondering if anyone has had a panel interview in new orleans yet? I am still waiting on a phone call but it has been over 3 weeks so I'm guessing I didnt get the job :-( Any information would be helpful. Thanks!!

I was also interviewing for the New Orleans area summer tech internship and the recruiter told me that applicants will have an answer either way by the end of March. I spoke to another recruiter at the career fair at my school and she said that the offers were given on Friday, March 18.

Thanks su9032 for the information! I want to start applying for other jobs but I have been waiting around for them to call. I feel like if they havent called by now they arent going to. We only have three days left of this month. I only know one other person that got 2 interviews and they havent heard anything either. Did you have a panel interview? I have heard that some people in the past summers had to do a panel interview as part of the process. Thanks!!:)

It was my understanding that the panel interview is the final interview, but that doesn't guarantee anything. I did not have one.
