Northwestern - Shreveport, LA

U.S.A. Louisiana

Published

I am starting nursing school (ADN) at Northwestern State University - Shreveport this fall ('06). I was wondering if anyone else on this board is currently at Northwestern, too?

I have a bachelor's degree in another field, so I think some of my previous classes will suffice for some of the pre-req's -- like English, speech, psych.

I have heard that it is very hard to get into clinicals at Northwestern, mostly due to shortage of staff ... But the flipside to that, I've heard, is that Northwestern is a great nursing school. I am nervous about the difficulty of getting into clinicals, though. A friend of mine did not get into clinicals the first try, even though she had a high GPA and also scored in the 99th percentile on the NET. She STILL did not get in ... However, she got into clinicals on the second try -- she says it is primarily because she signed on with a local hospital to work for them after graduation (the hospital and Northwestern, from what I hear, arrange this sometimes...). In fact, my friend was basically told that, if she signed on to work for this particular hospital for two years after graduation, her chances for getting into clinicals skyrocket. And, she did!

Anyway, I'd really like to get to know some people at Northwestern in Shreveport!

It's been 16 years since I graduated from NSU in Shreveport, but the education was excellent! Good luck in your studies!

I graduated from NSU in 1991. It was tough, but I think prepared us very well for how tough it is out in the real world.

I will be coming back to NSU this fall after taking some classes at another college. The only down side to the college that I can see is that they do not have a place for your labs so you have to go to another college (BPCC). I am going for my BSN. Good luck at NSU.
