I am a long term care nurse from the midwest. DON at a rural skilled nursing home. I am also starting to work as a LNC. I have a friend in the business who is starting an incorporated business with me. A little scary as she is very successful and well known in the business, knows many attorneys and charges about $100 more per hour than I do. I am hoping to gain some insight and confidence here in this forum.

First case was for merit. I didn't find it so. Atty still trying to convince me standard of care not met. Hard to convince him, but I'd have more luck working on the defense.

Can anyone relate?

Hello, JKDON and again, welcome.

So, are you self-taught or have you achieved certification and/or graduated from a Legal Nurse Consultant program?

Sounds as if you will gather great experience by being associated with this other LNC.

I know the feeling. Some attorney's do not want to hear this. I have had to go back and retrace everything to be sure on more than one occasion. But, they (the attorney's) will learn to trust your reviews. And, if they continue to try to "force" you to go along with a truly nonmeritorius case, then you know right then and there, you do not want any association with them.

I work mostly for the plaintiff.

I had planned to take a course and still may. My colleague has said that she has never worked for an atty who cares about the certification, or what class was taken. She has been told over and over, that atty need some good general reviewing skills and some current practice. I do want to have the inside track on how this all works. I don't even know how to write a report yet. So far still waiting to hear from this last atty on whether or not he is pursueing the case. Scary for me. Wondered if I missed something.

Many attorneys do not care about our "education". Just want a seasoned RN to know all the ins and outs of the medical-legal world is all.

I took the course to be able to know exactly how to write the reports as professionally as I could. Also, the course gave me many many opportunities to network with other LNCs. And, the opportunity to learn how to recognize deviations rapidly. Especially when you just were not quite sure. I also learned how to market myself. This was the biggest task for me.
