Hi all! Looking for some info. I'm considering CLNC - have read a lot of the posts, and I understand it will be a lot of hard work if I choose to go this direction. Marketing/networking looks like an uphill road, since I have just recently relocated to this area. On the plus side, I've been an RN for 29 years, 28 of which have been in a wide assortment of critical care roles (ICU/CCU/Burn/Trauma/Hyperbaric/Cath Lab/Radiology...).

Here are my main questions/concerns:

- Is the job rewarding? Not financially, per se, but personally. Is it fun, are you glad you are doing this for a living?

- What do you like most about being a LNC? What do you dislike?

- I have already figured out this is no get rich quick scheme. Few things in life are. I also do not want to disucss individual fees, and recognize each market, each LNC practice is unique. But is it feasible to earn, say, $40K (after expenses) or better per year, assuming some modicum of success, stick-to-it-iveness and time?

My goals are modest - I want to enjoy what I do for work, have time to enjoy my life, and make a reasonable income. If these goals can be achieved as a CLNC, super! It all looks so interesting and appealing to me as a profession - just want to what I'm in for if I choose to pursue this.

OH - one last thing, which training have you completed/prefer?

Good to read of your interest as LNC.

Have you checked out the sticky threads (found at the top of this forum) about the career including the Milazzo and AALNC courses?

Yes, it is quite reasonable to expect a very comfortable income with hard work, diligent marketing, and professionalism.

And, yes, the job is very rewarding, at least for me. I enjoy delving through the records to find the common thread that can make or break the case. I love the looks on my clients faces (attorneys) when they understand all the medical/nursing jargon and realize they have a case because of my astute observations and investigations.

Others will come along with input as well. Good luck with your decisions. Your background as a nurse is impressive and you should have no problems applying your knowledge to the legal aspects of nursing.

It is absolutely fascinating to go through records, correlating data, researching standards, and putting it all together.

If you enjoy using your brain and piecing together puzzles, this is the job to do that -without the hassle of the hospital breathing down your neck and telling you do do things you know isn't safe or ethical.

I am very happy with my education through the CLNC course. I have been able to answer questions for LNCs that did not take that course and did not have everything covered in the course that they took.

Yup, that's me! I LOVE going thru charts, trying to figure out what has gone on so far. It's like solving a 'who-done-it', a Sherlock Holmes sort of thing. I've always been that way, at work and at home, trying to figure out the end of the movie 10 minutes into it.

The nurse who enjoys this work will be the nurse who wants to know more about their patients than when their meds are due, more about their job than how soon they can punch out.

As the others said, if you love putting the story together and getting to the story behind the story, this could be for you.

Update:

I just past my 'certification' test from LNC Stat home study course! Woot!

I'm itching to complete the marketing package and get going. The more I study, delve into resources, play with practice records, etc. etc., the more hungry I get to do more of this. My mother-in-law is fishing for us to visit (out of state) about the time frame I plan to be marketing and hoping to get a case - tempting to not go, but what's another week. She's older and we haven't visited in waaaayyyyy too long (years).

I know, I know, it can take months before that precious first case, but I'm thinking positive!

As to whether or not it's worth it, I think that's up to each person to decide. I think if you put in the effort and pay attention to the ones who succeeded ahead of you, you can succeed and you will believe it was worth it. But at the beginning, it's easy to question ;)
