Hi there,

I'd like to hear from any students in the UK whose college or uni has let them make up hours in area's of nursing including psychiatric, pediatrics, obstetrics, in order to be eligible to work in the USA . My college is adamant that they will not allow me to do this and I am really disheartened, does anyone know of any other universities which will allow you to do this??

I trained a while ago and had most of the stuff in my training but didnt have obstetrics and phsyciatry, then did another course which gave me these things, I had to pay and basically spent time on wards for my practical for nothing, approach a school of nursing within a college and ask to join certain parts of the courses, and for the cost of it and approach local hospitals to volunteer time, although it has to be linked to the theory that you will get in the college. it only really means sitting in on some of the nurses lectures. I know some nurses who did online courses for the theory, but dont know where, they did their practical voluntarily. good luck.

I needed to make up some theory hours in psychiatry and paeds. I approached Thanes Valley Uni - London. I had previously completed a degree in Midwifery there. Finally after contacting the head of each dept of nursing I arranged to sit in on lectures for student nurses to complete the hours I was short of. After I got a letter from the head of dept documenting the lectures and hours and signed by them. This was deemed acceptable evidence of me 'making up the hours'. Did not need any clinical hours making up so cant help you there. Hope this helps. It did take me about 8 months of pestering the Uni before I got this sorted though........

Your really lucky your uni let you do that! I think it depends on the uni some will let you and some won't , Im at coventry uni and they are really strict and won't let me make up any of the hours i need from other areas of nursing or theory work so i am in the process of approaching UCE uni in birmingham to see if they can help! Thanks for replying :) if you hear of any other uni's that let you do this let me know

Sounds like it took you a long while to get those hourse, how long was the other course you had to take to get your obs and psychiatric hours? was it a year course? I was thinking about online courses too, so will have to look into that, thankyou! : )
