Hi

I have worked at the RMH in the past. There is lots of rental accommodation in the area. But as the Uni of Melbourne is just across the road from RMH even basic accomodation can be expensive. The closer you get to Carlton (heading east) the more it costs. Try http://www.domain.com.au/ to get an idea of rental costs.

Go to http://www.multimap.com and select Australia then select Victoria nad enter the suburb Carltoin to get an idea of the area.

Also might be worth talking to Human Resources at RMH to see if they have a list of local Real Estate Agents they have dealt with in the past.

Public trasport is good locally but can problematic at the weekend the further you get from the RMH.

And Melbourne is only cold in the winter it is one of the best cities in the world to live and work in.
