Hi, i'm a german nurse and in some few years i'd like to move to US to study. I don't have a BSN only my diploma . I just wanted to know if it is possible to enroll into a midwifery school as a foreign educated nurse? or generally must one have to study nursing first before going into midwifery?.

Will be grateful if you can give me some informations .thanks

I'm going to assume for the moment that you're specifically asking about nurse midwifery programs. In order to enter a graduate nursing program in the US, you would need to be licensed as an RN in the state in which you're attending school.

So, first, it would depend on whether or not your German diploma is considered equivalent to US basic nursing education to make you eligible for licensure. If not, you might need some additional education to meet those standards.

Second, it would depend on whether the schools would consider your previous education equivalent to their entry requirements.

It couldn't hurt to ask some schools that interest you.

There are also non-nurse midwifery programs and midwives in the US. That is an entirely different matter than nurse midwifery.

Is a US midwifery credential something that you can use in Germany? Nursing degrees and credentials don't necessarily transfer gracefully from one country to another, since different countries have different standards and nursing roles.

Best wishes for your journey!

Thanks for your reply. It's very informative. I haven't made my mind on taking a midwifery program yet but i'd wanted to get information before i make up my mind. I have another question:if i were to partake a non-nurse midwifery -or midwifery programs, how long are these programs? 3 years or less?

Thanks in advance
