Pediatric IV Team Job description

Specializes in Neonatal ICU (Cardiothoracic).

Hey all,

I've been eyeing a PT peds IV team position here at my large hospital. It's 11a-11p (my favorite shift). I was wondering what is involved in a peds IVT position. The job listing is just generalized HR babble, and I'd like to avoid contacting the manager just yet. Any insight would be appreciated. From what I know from adult IVTs, you start IV's, perform central line dsg changes, insert PICCS (after training) etc.....

Thanks.

Sound like fun! Here is what a pediatric Iv nurse would be asked to do.

1.Vascular access . This will include peripherals and PICC

2. Care and maintenance of VADS. This will include dressing changfes of the intermediate and long-term lines. This will also include all types of troubleshooting especially dealing with catheter occlusions.

3. Teaching parents and staff about vasculal access.

4. dealing with all the complications that occur from any of the vascular access devices.

5. Blood draws from VADS or seperate stick if lab unable to draw it.

6. Quality assurance tasks

7. You may be viewing and releasing PICCs for use after becoming certified. That depends on your hospital though

8. You will be expected to know everything about IV therapy especially pediatric IV therapy. You will be a resource person. This will include knowing about all the therapies (ie.antibiotics,TPN)

By the way you can learn all this I did and most of the theory I learned on my own

* perhaps you will assist with medication administation
