Indiana State University LPN-BSN 2012

Nursing Students Indiana (ISU)

Published

Hello,

I am due to start the LPN-BSN program at Indiana State University in the fall of 2012 and decided to start a thread for fellow students who may be starting around the same time so that we can connect and support each other.

I'm in Maryland ;)

I'm considering enrolling. I have to make a decision between excelsior lpn to rn or indiana lpn to bsn. I am opting more for the indiana because of the clinical. I live in Connecticut. Has anyone from Ct. done the Indiana lpn to bsn and do you know where the clinical facility's are around here?

Current agencies are listed at Indiana State University : College of Nursing, Health, and Human Services : Clinical Agency List

Requests for other agencies can also be submitted (see Indiana State University : College of Nursing, Health, and Human Services : Clinical Agency Information )

Requesting information from current CT residents who are enrolled in the LPN to BSN program at ISU is not necessary because you are responsible for providing your own clinical sites. ISU will not locate a clinical for the clinical portion of the class--the entire placement rests on your shoulders. The rest of the program, the lecture portion, is the same for everyone. You do it on line with the people enrolled for the semester.

Thanks for the info. Do you know if anyone has done part of there clinical from a home care agency. Does the preceptor have to have a masters or can they have a bsn. Also I have taken several of the general classes, are they only transferable if you have an associates degree or can you just transfer them without a degree? Does it matter how long ago you took the classes?

You will have various clinicals--from mental health and public health to acute care and critical care. ISU has published specific requirements for the clinicals. Go to the ISU site and bring up the catalogue to look up the definition of those clinicals. The definition will give you an idea what type of placement is expected for each clinical. I seriously doubt your home health care employer would qualify for any clinical.

Does the preceptor have to have a masters or can they have a bsn.

Again, you will have to go to the clinical requirements for the course. A blanket statement for each course is not sufficient because there are various requirements for each course and some states require BSN while others require a masters degreed instructor/preceptor.

Also I have taken several of the general classes, are they only transferable if you have an associates degree or can you just transfer them without a degree?

Your final destination is a bachelors in registered nursing. All classes that may transfer for the bachelors degree whould transfer if ISU only if accepted them. The only way you would know what classes transfer is to provide ISU with official transcripts. After you provide them, ISU will be evaluate them. Once evaluated, you will receive a DARS, which will outline what classes transferred or what did not, what classes you need to take, and what classes you have been given credit for. Armed with this info, you will know how long it will take you to matriculate through the program. Because every student enters ISU with different credits, there is no standard graduation date. The LPN to BSN program requires gen ed classes as well as the core nursing courses of 6 clinicals and 8 lecture classes.

Does it matter how long ago you took the classes?

No, unlike many other colleges/universities, ISU has no time limit as to when you took your lab classes or any other classes.

If you have already taken most of the standard pre-reqs for a BSN at another campus that is accredited and they transfered, how long after that does the program take before you are officially done?

I was told on the phone 2-3 years but thats with NO pre-reqs.

Any insight would be fabulous

There are 6 clinicals and 8 lectures. There are normally no summer classes. Calif BRN mandates students take no more than 2 classes a semester and the classes with clinicals must be taken lecture & clinical concurrently. If you have 6 clinicals and 8 lecture classes and there are 2 semesters a year (no summers), you can do the math.

I just got off of the phone. I was told that they are not accepting anymore California students. This is due to Sonoma State University not wanting to be in partnership with ISU nursing. They are sending out a letter with all applicants. Wow!

I am in the program for ISU for Fall 2012 and Sonoma State University is still responsible for our clinical. Sonoma State is in charge of all California nursing students. I have copied and pasted part of the letter they sent.

In collaboration with Sonoma State University, J*** ****, RN, PhD, California Preceptorship Faculty Coordinator and M**** *****, California Program Development Specialist, will be responsible for facilitating the arrangement of all California clinical placements in this program to ensure that all California Board of Registered Nursing guidelines are met and to ensure your success in the program. They will also be available to answer any questions or concerns you have regarding the program and/or clinical.

So I am sure they are not backing out of the partnership.
