Ivy Tech: Accepted for Fall 2011

U.S.A. Indiana

Published

This thread is for all of us who were lucky enough to get into the Ivy Tech ASN/PN program for the Fall 2011. Many of the threads are concentrated on the TEAS test, scores, grades, and acceptance letters. As a prospective student, these are great. Getting in almost becomes an obsession! This is meant for those who are already past that stage and know that they are going to school in the fall. There is sooo much to do before school starts (immunizations, CPR, orientation, financial aid, etc..). What campus will you be attending? Maybe we can make some connections with each other before school starts. What have you already done/still have to do? Any questions about the process? What are your concerns? Are you excited, nervous, etc..? What have you heard as far as the first semester of nursing school? :nurse:

Oh I feel your pain! I wish there was a way to atleast get a little money up front for all of this! Right now, I am trying to pick up some overtime to pay for everything until the financial aid (hopefully I get a refund) comes in or I hear about a scolarship. The CPR class that Red Hot Mom and I are signed up for is $50. I also talked to St. Elizabeth in Lafayette, and they told me $50 as well. So, I am thinking $50-$60 is pretty normal.

Check your school's bookstore for stethoscopes and other equipment. Most schools with nursing schools, with bookstores, carry recommended stethoscopes. A Sprague is a good bet and not too expensive, if your school approves that type.

I just received my acceptance letter today!! My letter doesnt say anything about immunizations or anything? I have a seperate sheet that goes over the CPR, but thankfully my job at the hospital has me certified through red cross already. I'm assuming that the immunizations will be gone over at the orientation, but I want to make sure I have enough time to get them all done before school starts! Anyone else going to Evansville for the PN program?!

Congrats on your acceptance TSullivan! I think I have come to the conclusion that none of the letters are the same! You would think there would be some standard info included in all of the letters, but from what I have seen, we all have little bits of info. Like someone else said, if we could combine all of our letters together, we might have the necessary info! Our orientation for Kokomo is June 16th, so I hope that we will get all of our other information that wasn't in the letter at that time. That still gives us about a month and a half before everything is due.

I was sitting here thinking about gas prices and my commute to campus in the fall. Is there anyone who lives near the Flora area that would be interested in talking about a carpool to the Kokomo campus once we figure out schedules?

Hello, just got the Lafayette acceptance letter, ASN, ;) and am wondering if anyone else out there is going to go to the Lafayette Campus, would like to say hey and such.

Congratualtions to all of those accepted, the first step in a never-ending journey.

Congrats on the acceptance to Lafayette! I too got the Lafayette acceptance letter today. I have already accepted kokomo's ASN program, and was sure I was going to stick with that...but now, I find myself wondering about Lafayette. Oh the decisions! I guess either way it will open a spot for one person to bump up at either kokomo or Lafayette. :nurse:

I got my acceptance letter to Lafayette ASN program today too! I am so excited, I can't wait for orientation on the 23rd. Congrats to those who also got accepted to Lafayette :)

Thanks for the Lafayette shout out. I know, I can't wait for orientation either, you'll be able to recognize me I'll be the one wearing the red carnation!

As someone who sat through the torture of waiting for the acceptance letter last year, I say congrats to all who got accepted for Fall 2011. At your orientation meeting you'll receive most if not all the information you'll need before you start school in August. There are a couple things that came as a surprise for me when I started at Ivy Tech last fall and maybe my experience can help you out a little.

-First there was a cost for a criminal background check. This wasn't cheap and I had to use a specific company. This was paid out of pocket and had to be done before the first month of school was over. I think I paid 108 or 109. That kind of made me mad.

-Get your stethoscope sooner rather than later. I regretted not using the great deal I saw at allheart.com. I could have saved 10-20 bucks versus rushing to Scrubs and Beyond the weekend for my groovy Littmann the weekend before the BP check offs. I knew I was going to need a stethoscope but didn't know when it was going to be needed. This is another out of pocket expense unless you want to get one from the bookstore. If possible, listen with one first and decide if it’s for you.

-Don't forget to get a pin light. It cost a few bucks and you can get it in the bookstore. I don't recommend buying the ones that click (like a pen); I ended up breaking the bulb in my bag and have been bothered by clicking pen lights ever since.

-White socks and white leather shoes

-A little memo pad in your scrubs is majorly helpful and inexpensive.

-You can reuse your red lab bag (I’m going to assume it stays red) from Fundamentals/Med-Surg to haul stuff to and from clinical.

-Lose your extra piercings and cover those tattoos

I’m sure that there is more but trying to think back to last year takes a lot of work. It’s amazing how quickly the first year flies by and how much you grow as a student nurse. Best of luck to all of you.

Hey, thanks for all the information! I was wondering if you know if Ivy Tech cares what kind and color stethoscopes their students use? I found a good deal on a Littmann, but wanted to make sure I got the right one. Thank you! :)

You are welcome for the info. Again, the school you will be attending may be giving you some of that information, but then again maybe not. I think it's nice being able to get a heads up.

At the Anderson campus we were able to choose the brand and color of our scopes. I went with the raspberry Littmann Classic II. I like it a lot though I do find it heavy. Some of my classmates got the Littmann Lightweight. They tend to forget they have their scopes on. Others bought from the bookstore. The bookstore has a stethoscope and BP cuff set and they come in black as well as some colors. I recommend trying on some different scopes to see how well you can hear out of them before buying if possible.

Another thing I forgot to mention is the cost of ATI. ATI is like prepping for NCLEX. ATI testing may also be tied to your final depending on your class and assuming other schools are doing what Anderson is doing. You should use it often. It is an additional cost, but at least comes out of your financial aid and not out of your pocket. ASN's can expect to be paying over 300 dollars (might be closer to 350? can't remember) and LPN's will be paying less due to being in school for only 3 semesters.
