Nursing Experience

U.S.A. Illinois

Hey everyone!

I know that this might sound somewhat strange, but I have recently been looking at available job opening for nurses in the the Chicagoland area, and it seems that every position requires at least one yr of experience. If you are a recent nursing school graduate and are looking for a job, obvioulsly you haven't worked as a nurse before. Do some hospitals consider clinicals as a yr of experience or do you have to work in a doctor's office or non-hospital setting for a little bit? Hopefully I'm not the only one wondering about this!

Thanks!

I've been trying to figure out the same thing, but from what someone else said, we shouldn't have problems finding something when we graduate. I won't have any experience other than clinicals when I am done, so I was worried as well...

I guess you could call the hospital and find out? I've always thought it can't hurt to apply - the worst that can happen is they'll say no!

yea, you're right...but i'm glad i'm not the only one who was thinking about it!!

Nope, definitely not the only one!!! I was thinking I don't want to go through all this schooling and not be able to get a job in the end, but I think they said in 2010 (which I will graduate Dec. 2009), nurses will be at an huge low, so I am thinking we "should" be ok!

seriously i heard the same thing when i was in nursing school. its gonna be so easy to find a job because there is a need for nurses everywhere. i went to school around champaign and i saw my classmates getting jobs quickly around that area. but once i came up to chicago, i found out it is REALLY competitive. there is SO many new nursing grads and they all want the day shift in a well established hospital such as rush, uic , loyola, northwestern, uofc, etc. I ended up in a small hospital yet part of a big network of many hospitals. they are really short of nurses and i got a job right away there. i plan to transfer to a bigger hospital in the future but now im happy getting the experience because wherever you go, you will learn tons! good luck with your job hunting. its a very long and patient process..

wooji what are you looking at? i work in chicago area and my hospital is hiring, and they hire really easily.

from my experience, it was very hard finding a job in a well established chicago hospital such as uic, rush, northwestern, loyola, u of c, etc. its because there are so many new nursing grads and everybody wants to work there, so its comepetitive. i ended up in a smalll hospital that is part of a bigger hospital network. let me know if your interestested. my hospital is hiring and youll prob get hired fast cuz they're really short
