NIU 2016 Nursing Admissions

Hey I applied as a transfer student (associates in science geared towards nursing)to NIU. I am trying to find out what are the chances I will get in and how many transfers do they usually take in? Also if anyone has been to NIU what the program was like for them. Also what are other decent nursing programs in illinois I should look into applying to? I know it's a lot of rambling,but thank you in advance. :)

Thank you! I'm not a transfer, I started here as a freshman. I'm currently in my first semester of the program. I absolutely love all of the instructors! There aren't a lot of transfers, but I definitely know a few! It's a pretty competitive program. However, it is very high quality! :)

Hi, I also applied for NIU's Fall 2016/Spring 2017 nursing program. I'm a transfer as well. Pinksnowflakes, what would you say the average accepted GPA is? Do you know if it's more competitive for transfers? Thanks!

It's definitely more competitive for transfers, because there's only a certain amount of transfer students accepted. I would say around a 3.8 to a 4.0 is what most of my peers had. :) However, it heavily depends on the semester. I know people from last semester who got in with a 3.5!!

I am a recent grad so some things may have changed since then, but personally we had a ton of transfers in our cohort. One of my friends had a bachelor's with a GPA that wasn't as competitive, so the advisor suggested she enroll in NIU first and take NURS 302 then apply, because it's the one NURS class you can take outside the program and the GPA requirement is/was more forgiving for current NIU students. So she did that and I think took a couple of classes for a minor and then applied and was accepted. But I highly recommend talking to an advisor before doing anything like that if GPA is a concern.

PS If you get accepted for the spring semester, you can also take NURS 302 in the fall and get it out of the way so it's one less class to juggle, if you don't mind paying the annoying fees. Also a small chunk of people accepted for the spring end up getting offered earlier fall spots if things open up.

The instructors are nice overall, I had a great experience. Nothing is perfect, of course, but they do seem to address most problems.
