So I failed my HESI Really bad... :( Am I going to fail the nclex?!

Nursing Students HESI

Published

I have taken 3 HESI's so far... Fundamentals, Mid Curricular... and then Med-Surg. For the first two, my scores were 696 & 675. Then, for my med surg... you won't believe this but my conversion score was a 57%! & I felt more confident about that one!

I need help, I am SO discouraged. I feel like a failure at nursing and am not TERRIFIED that I won't pass the NCLEX! Let me just say that, even though this is bad, I DID NOT study for either of them, because everyone says that you're not supposed to, right? I just went in there and kind of guessed so I guess that's my problem. So I know that next time, I need to study, but I don't know how, and mostly, I don't know If I am normal or not :(

I just need assurance and advice, please. Have any of you failed your Hesi's and then went on to pass your exit exam & then your nclex?

*What* was your game plan? I'm registered for an NCLEX Review my school offers next semester... I bought the HESI book... Might take hurst review or another one if anyone can suggest any... I am willing to do anything. I am SCARED. I need advice. I need to know what it takes. I do not want to go through a 4 year BSN degree (I'm a Junior Right now) and not be able to pass the Nclex!

Help...

Well first of all, your first mistake is by not studying! Yes, you should know this but STUDYING will help you out.. I bought this $209 program called HESI study your best grade for my exit hesi and I made almost a perfect score (1094) and I don't consider myself the smartest one in the class.. I failed a semester and a hesi but what I did learn is that studying will get you farther than not studying :) happy studyinh

I second the my best grade program. I think the questions on that program are harder than the HESI though. I got a 1088 on the HESI and did not do that well on their tests, but it really can get you ready. I think I only paid $100 or so though. Just do as many NCLEX questions as you can.

I haven't taken the exit HESI yet (I graduate in May, so it is coming up soon though!). But i did recently take the MedSurg HESI. I studied the online Evolve MedSurg Case Studies and the MedSurg section of the HESI NCLEX-RN Review (I think it is the 4th edition.. Green paperback book). By doing the online Evolve Case Studies in the MedSurg Section and by reading over the summaries provided in the HESI review book, I was able to achieve a conversion score of 99.99%! (actual score of 1235). It is possible to do this well on the HESI tests with the help of the Evolve Case Studies and the HESI review book. (I have in previous semesters taken the Mental Health HESI and the Health Assessment HESI. I achieved conversion scores of 99.99% and 94.18%, respectively.) I highly recommend studying the online Evolve Case Studies and the summaries/questions in the latest HESI NCLEX-RN Review book. While I feel the Evolve case studies were more beneficial if I had to choose between the two, the HESI book still provided excellent outlines/summaries. To prepare for the exit HESI, I plan to study the same materials.

You can't study for the HESI in a sense as you would a normal exam. You have to take the Evolve case studies and scour the internet for more HESI-styled questions and do those, while reading the rationale on every single one. I'm sorry you failed the HESI. I've heard that even though you may have done poorly on the HESI (or vice versa), it doesn't matter much to the NCLEX.

I would suggest doing the evolve case studies if your school provides them. and doing practice questions everyday!! A lot of my classmates including me took the Hurst Review before our Exit HESI & NCLEX and did very well on both. I used a book by LaCharity that helped me with priorizitation since the NCLEX is known to have crazy amounts of those type of questions. I don't think you are going to fail if you develop an awesome study habit. Good Luck to you!

I did NCLEX review questions from Saunders to prepare for the Hesi for Med Surg and Exit. It helped a lot. I don't necessarily think your score means you'll fail the NCLEX since that was your raw score with no prep.

how are you doing in your nursing course exams? If you're skimming right at the passing mark for those, then I think it's probably time to examine how well you are really synthesizing all the info. The HESIs are tests that you can't really *study* for, because they aren't testing a specific area of knowledge, but more how you can piece together what you've already learned (and often, if you can apply that knowledge to unfamiliar situations and critically think through them)

I also did the Evolve case studies and scored 99.99% conversion on my midterm HESI. Just do the case studies, they do help.
