Good morning everyone! I'm a little late posting this but it's been a busy month. I passed my HESI with flying colors, first time. my cumulative average was 90%.

so I got:

90% in reading comprehension

92% in grammar

96% in vocabulary

[COLOR=#141823]and a miserable 84% in math. I needed 80% to pass the math, but with the program's average being 91%, I need to redo it in order to get placement in next year's program. I scheduled to take my math again in 30 days.

[COLOR=#141823]I studied using the Elsevier guide I bought on Amazon and plenty of conversion practice problems. Quizlet is my best friend. And of course, I found lots of help and support on Allnurses! Know your percentages, your ratios, your fractions. The things that threw me were story problems of "What did Suzy pay on a 7% sales tax if her purchase was $41.00?" (example, not actual question) I was so worried about the timing of the test that I blazed through the test and didn't double check my work. So, I will take a deep breath and sort out the math the next time I go in. Really in all honesty, just take a deep breath, relax, and study for this test. The day before, don't try to cram. Long term memory serves you better if you don't confuse it with short term stuffing. I'm an older student with teenage children, and if I can do this, you can too!

So...I went back 2 and a half months and retook the math. I studied during the week before as much as I could, but I wasn't overwhelmed and even had 45 min. to study before i went to take the test. This time around, it was ratios and conversions, there was a statistical question thrown in but with logical reasoning I figured it out. I got 96%!!! I am so stoked. Math always kept me from even attempting college, and I finally just "bit the bullet" and even though I had to start at Developmental Math I I plugged right along. So glad I did. Before you take the HESI, take Medical Math course at LSSC. He is the biggest help I ever had but all the math teachers at the college were great.

have you graduated from LSSC. How's it going so far ? I see you was a can before did you continue working while in school? Did it help you overall to be a cna as well. Thanks for the info on the HESI for LSSC I was planning to apply but wasn't sure what hey required for the HESI

Yes, I really think it does help to be a CNA. The best advise I have gotten from the second year's and from the instructors on HESI and exams in general is to read the questions thouroughly, find the action needed, and find the answer that jumps out at you as right. Never give up, if it's truly what you want you will find a way to do it. With determination, not luck, I will graduate in 2017 with dreams of relocating to Texas, I've always wanted to live there. I plan on pursuing my BSN online, and heck, maybe even getting my masters. I started out thinking I wanted Hospice nursing but Ive seen and met so many nurses that my goals and horizons have broadened. Its truly amazing.

Oh and yes, still working as a CNA, albiet ony 15 hours a week. Im going to apply at the hospital as a nurse tech soon though, maybe weekends, Im not sure yet. You really need to study a lot though, and do practice nclex questions, and really shadow and help a lot during clinicals if it's within your scope to do so. It's great. It's the best thing I have ever done.
