HESI A2 EXAM 12/30/17

So, I just took the HESI A2 exam on 12/30/17, and it was a BREEZE! My overall score was 87.5%. I used the HESI ADMISSION ASSESSMENT 4/e. I studied for about a month just so I could have the A&P section somewhat mastered. If you are a fast learner, then about 2 weeks should be good enough! Here is a breakdown of each section:

Reading Comprehension:86%

Math:92%

Grammar:88%

A&P:84%

Critical Thinking: 920

ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY:

My main concern was A&P because the book doesn't do into depth for this test. So grab a textbook and refresh your memory for this subject! A&P section will ask you about the muscles, body planes, osteoblast, osteoclast, osteocytes, the heart, organ systems, and location of major muscles. PLEASE make sure you know everything about the ENDOCRINE SYSTEM. Know what hormones do what, and pay close attention the reproductive system. This section was mostly A&P I.

Reading Comp:

I did the reading section first just because I wanted to get it over! Pretty basic! Read a short paragraph or 2 and answer simple questions. Main idea, what is being implied, fact vs. opinion. Also, be able to make inferences about the reading selection. If you complete the reading practice test, you should fine it to be very similar to the actual test.

Grammar:

This section freaked me out a bit! On most questions, you can do choice of elimination. Some will have multiple answers that may sound correct, but always go with your first mind.Know the difference between (affect and effect,)( lie,lay,laid), (their,there and they're), (were and was), parts of speech, independent clauses. Majority of the questions were " which sentence is grammatically correct"

Math:

Math was a piece of cake. Make sure you go over everything in the study guide, and you should be able to make at least 90%. Most of this section contained ratios and fractions. I had one question about military time and none about roman numerals. I had about 5 word problems that required you to fill in the blank. Also, converting from grams to pounds, ml to L, grams to kg, and gallons to ounces was on there. The study guide will most definitely show you everything you need to know for this section

Critical Thinking:

You can't really study for this section. It's more of " what would you do in this scenario if you were a nurse". I will tell you to ALWAYS put the patient first. There isn't a right or wrong answer so just pick an answer that will work best for the patient.

Hey, I'm talking the Hesi in about three weeks. Do you remember any of the question on the critical thinking part or the format? Did they ask you to prioritize care between two patients (ex. one patient is bleeding, other is having trouble breathing)? Also, was there a question about accepting muffins or chocolates?

This is not the exact question but it was something like:

a 74 year old with diabetes is asking for insulin

a 24 year old that is paralyzed wants to turn over in bed

a 34 year old with acute pain is asking for pain medicine

Which patient will you help first?

Another question may be:

A patient is complaining of chest pain what is the first thing you should do to assess this patient?

Call the providing physician

Give pain medicine

Ask about prior heart complications

I didn't have a question about muffins but I did see that on quizlet for practice! Quizlet is VERY HELPFUL so make sure you check it out.

One last question: were there any hard medical terms or were there general things like the diabetes/insulin (something we all most likely learned prior or during A&P)?

Any medical abbreviations like NPO?

Hello! I'm new to this website. I'm currently looking to enter the nursing program at FSCJ but I don't have much money at the moment. I have to take my test on Jan 31, but admission isn't until Feb 15. I've gone to Quizlet but find that they don't really help show me the layout of the test so I'm not sure it'll help me. Are there any websites or books that I could get access to without spending too much? I find the book that I would like to use for this test is a bit expensive (the one OP suggested) :(

Hey, I would suggest checking your local or college library for HESI prep materials. I found the book op is talking about at my own public library (on hold so I had to buy it) but I found both the 2nd and 3rd edition at my college library. You can also try buying a used copy or try buying the 3rd edition (I've never used it but some people have said it's pretty smiliar). I've also borrowed a Kaplan Nursing School Entrance Exam book & a McGraw-Hill Nursing Entrance Exam book as well; both are general books for most nursing school entrance exams. If you're taking the A&P section, a book a lot of people are using is CliffNotes Anatomy and Physiology. I believe it's less than $10 on amazon. The HESI A2 Pocket Prep app is another resource many people are using. It's $12 to buy the full app. Many people who've taken the test have said it worked well for them and that the format was somewhat similar to what you'll see on the test. I personally haven't tried looking for books on E-BAY but perhaps they have some cheap books on there.

Quizlet has A LOT of resources. Try looking up "Hesi A2 [insert subject here]" and you'll find a lot of study sets. As for the format of the exam, I hope someone who's taken it will come by and tell you. I'm not completely sure myself.

I haven't thought to go to the library because I honestly thought I wouldn't find them there, haha. I figured the new editions would be too new. My main concern was that there may be a discrepancy between the newest edition and the older ones. I'm nervous about how difficult this test might be lol. I'm gonna head to the library and see what I find! Thank you and I'm gonna keep checking back up on this thread for more information :)

Thank you :) The terminology was super general( everyday words) nothing like NPO! This test is really easy once you have A&P down. Let me know how you do on your exam.

@ meemersworth The book that I used to study was about 20-30 dollars. The Hesi Admission Assessment 4th edition. This book will help you as far as math, grammar, and reading. As far as the anatomy section, you can look up crash course videos (goes into depth for every organ system), khan academy is very good, and also quizlet.

Where do you suggest I look when it comes to biology and chem? Will the book you used help with those sections? TBH, i didn't have quite as amazing teachers for those so I'm more rusty on those subjects than A&P. Just need to know what to study and what not to do I don't waste too much time! >_

@meemersworth I didn't have to take biology and chemistry section, but the subjects are in this book as well. Also try using cliffnotes! They have a lot of great information on there.

Hey, I was accepted into FSCJ for fall semester, but I live in St Augustine and decided to take a spot at SJRS instead. I had to take the HESI for both and ended up with a 98% for math, 92% for reading comp, 92% for grammar composite score, 88% for A&P, and a my lowest was 78% for Biology. I used the HESI A2 book, the HESI pocket prep app(super helpful), and the HESI mastery app. I also found quite a few Youtube videos helpful. Like videos on basic math videos; ratios, proportions, and fractions. I watched videos on common grammar mistakes. Review your body structures. If you have any questions feel free to reach out.
