i was wondering if anyone else on allnurses is applying for manoa's bs nursing program for fall 2009. i sent in my application this past week, and i am so nervous. i keep thinking, what if i didn't fill out a portion of the application or what if...

anyway, i applied with the following:

pre-requisite gpa-4.0

cumulative gpa-3.43 (due to a really awful gpa almost 10 yrs ago right out of high school)

net scores- 88%

i have all my ge requirements completed, and am currently enrolled in ma 100 & pharm 203

the website says for a competitive applicant, you should have a pre-req gpa of 3.5, cumulative of 3.2, and test scores at 75%

if anyone else is applying, post here. i wish you all luck, and as soon as you hear anything from the nursing department...please post! i think they said the latest i would hear back from them would be early may. i hope i don't have to wait that long!

The upside was that I was able to get into the UHM Nursing Program with a 3.7 g.p.a and 92% on NET. I was also wait-listed. Also I heard they are taking in more students now. The downside is that I heard there were even more applicants because of the economy. Seems like everyone wants to get into healthcare because no matter how bad the economy is, there will always be sick people. good luck though.

Thanks for your reply. If you don't mind me asking...what semester did you get accepted for? You say you were wait-listed...how much notice did you get before the semester started? Also, I am wondering if you had all the pre-reqs & co-reqs completed prior to applying (like pharm & Stats & Nutrition) ? Sorry lots of personal questions, I am just nervous about my application.

Thanks again.

i got in for spring 09 (this semester) with a 2.7 cum GPA, 4.0 pre-req, and 99% NLN. those are the 3 main factors so if you're lacking in one (my cGPA) you can make up for it in another category. the old adviser was very helpful in telling you where you stand. in advising she'd actually add up your points for you exactly as admissions would be doing. i was very concerned about my horrible cGPA but after going to see her she adding things up and pretty much told me "welcome to the nursing program"

i'm not sure how good the new girls are for pre-nursing advising though.. at least they actually have people now. last semester the front desk clerk was answering all the questions...

best of luck to you!

Thank you for your reply as well. I appreciate your input. Can you tell me how long it took for you to get your "official" letter in the mail for acceptance? Did it really take until the end of the current semester?

Do they send you a packet of paperwork right away, or is it just a letter? Congrats on getting in. How is your first semester going? Maybe I'll see you around.

Also, were you applying with all your co-reqs & gen ed requirements completed? ( like Pharm 203, Stats, FSHN 475?) I was wondering how much that helped with the application process. Anyway, thanks again. Best of luck to you.

UH nursing has a point system based on various categories for example, you receive points for completing the pre-req. the more pre-reqs you complete the higher the points. Your GPA plays a big role in the points as well, other categories like NET, SAT,TOFEL,NLN test scores play a big role. I know this because the counselor gave me the scoring sheet.

I was accepted to the UH accelerated program back in summer 2006, and graduated in winter 2007. during the entire program the staff were saying how easy i would be to get a job in the nursing field and not to worry. well this wasnt true for many graduates. 5 out of our 20 classmates still do not have a nursing job, 4 of our classmates including myself moved out of oahu to find jobs in the mainland. the economy has affected the healthcare industry...since people are losing their jobs they also lose there medical benefits which translates to people not having medical insurance.

I heard that there is a hiring freeze at many big oahu hospitals, including queen's, hmc, etc. Also hospitals are not as willing to hire new grads because of the time and cost involved in training new grads, therefore hospitals would rather hire experienced nurses.

So in a nutshell, there is not a nursing shortage at this moment. There is actually an influx of nurses in the medical field. I have a co-worker who's husband works in the emergency room at stanford hospital in california, and he said that they have one night position open and the nurse manager hiring for that one position are overwhelmed with the amount of applicants that have applied for that one position. the nurse mangers job now is to choose the best qualified nurse who has many years of experience in the field and give them the job.

good luck with school, study hard and dont be discouraged. I surely do hope that the economy picks up, it will only benefit the people.

i believe i recieved a phone call from the administrator that i got accepted then a week later i recieved the official letter of acceptance. then from this point you have to get all your paperwork ready and done. the biggest part for me was to get all of my vacinations up to date, get my physical, get my tb clearance.

i believe i received my official letter the second week of november. apps were due oct 1st so not too bad. i know i received my KCC acceptance 1 week prior so i was kind've undecided on what to do since KCC needed a response within a matter of days.

the acceptance packet comes with all the info you need. lots of health clearance stuff you'll need to do. it'll be a lot less stressful if you've already got some of it out of the way. it's a real pain running around trying to gather your records and get your titers/immunizations done while trying to study for finals. the health clearance is due in about a month but you won't be able to register until you've cleared them. the sooner you get your clearance the sooner you can pick your clinical sites so it's in your best interest to get it done in a timely manner (before the site you want fills up).

i'm not sure how many extra pts you get for phrm/fshn/etc (if any). best thing is to try talking to the advisers.

and as far as the job market, a lot may change by the time you graduate. todays grads entered nursing school when there were limitless job openings. things may turn around by the time you finish. a lot depends upon when our older nurses decide to retire. the avg age of hawaii's nurses is getting quite high IIRC. of course until the economy turns around many may continue to delay their retirement.

I too am waiting patiently for a reply for this fall. I really wish that they would look at home much experience we have as well as our grades. I've done a lot of medical training through the army... had EMT license for 3 years as well. My cumulative grades suck but my pre-reqs are pretty good. Took the NET like literally the last day possible... didn't know what to expect but came out with a 85%. Wish I couldve taken it once more and actually tried.

I heard we are supposed to get a letter saying they received our apps but I never got one and I walked it into the office before the deadline. Anyone else get anything?

good luck to everyone!
