by nbarcai Nov 1, '08Hi my name is Nikki and I'm a nursing student in Illinois. I have a presentation on Hawaiian culture and its effects on health care, etc. Having a difficult time finding recent statistics on common causes of death, common diseases that occur among Hawaiian culture, and if there are any special healing and belief practices. Any foods, plants, etc used for traditional or modern medicine. One last thing how would food choices and habits impact health??????????????Please any information would be extremely helpful.

Hawaii's a fairly modern place. you'd find a lot more info on health problems with pacific islanders throughout the rest of the pacific though. there are many areas untouched by modern civilization where traditional practices and beliefs are still commonplace. not so much in Hawaii though.Hi my name is Nikki and I'm a nursing student in Illinois. - Nov 2, '08 by nbarcaiHi thanks for your reply, I see what your saying I am finding a lot on pacific islanders as well but it all kind of contradicts itself. One site will have obesity as a common disease where one site will say its not a prob. So yes I will go ahead and use pacific islanders for my presentation. Do you know of any helpful sites. Thanks so much Nikki

Check the Hawaii State Department of Health website. Link is below.

There is an enormous amount of info related to specific groups(Hawaiians) and the population in the islands in general. Some really good stuff. What part of Illinois? I grew up in Chicago, moved out here about 11 years ago...keep forgetting to move back
Good luck with your paper. Let me know if your looking for anything specific.
