Hawaii Boards

U.S.A. Hawaii

Published

Hello, I have been a RN in the state of Michigan for five years and I am thinking of relocating to Hawaii. Does anyone know where I can find information if I need to retake the boards in either state? I've been on vacation to both places and I much prefer it over the long winters here in MI. Does anyone know what the job market is like in San Francisco or Oahu? Thank you.

No. You apply for a nursing license by endorsement. If US educated it's pretty simple overall. The NCLEX is a national exam

Hi, so just to verify, you only need to take the NCLEX once? And if you pass you can work in all 50 states without ever taking it again?

Not exactly. As long as you continues have an active license you can apply to any other state for a license by endorsement. The NCLEX results are accepted by all BoN. The issue would be if you did not maintain an active nursing license in any state you may have to retest.

For example someone passed the NCLEX in 2006 but never obtained a license nor practiced nursing in the US. CABRN has a limit of 8 years for a lapse and if that person wishes to obtain an RN license and work in CA they need to reapply and retake the NCLEX.
