Any one in the KCC ADN program

U.S.A. Hawaii

Hi!

I am taking my NLN exam to get into the ADN program at KCC in July for Spring 09, just wanted to know from a students perspective what the program is like.

Thanks!!!

:nuke:

Nope, there are clinicals every semester. First semester is normally LTC/medsurg, second is medsurg, third is OB/peds/psych and the final semester is medsurg again. The only thing that changes between medsurg classes are the amount of patients you have. It slowly increases from 1-4or5.

When you get your letter don't get discouraged if you get put on the alternate list. For our class I think we had 10 people as alternates come in, and out of the 10, 9 got accecpted. Just make sure you have all your physical/cpr/first aid/immunizations and all that other stuff done on time. And again, good luck. It's a life changing event once you get into nursing school.

Assuming everything goes to plan I'll grad Dec '09.

Yeah the alternate list sounds worst than it is I guess. I asked one of the counslers about the alt. list like how is the chances of anyone even getting in on the alt. list, but then they said that n-e thing can happen. I just thought that once you get accepted you wouln't really want to give that chance up you know.

Well congrats to you on gonna grad next year!!

I think like everyday I just can't stop thinking about the letter...i am just so scared but anxious at the same time....it feels like they are taking forevers!!

Do you think that I should like do my CPR and first aid now? Or do you think I should wait...Where did you get your cpr at? I think I called the one in Halawa before but then they only have like so many opening with like only 10 people or something at a time....

Yeah, I honestly wonder how so many alternates got in. I mean, I was taking pre-req's with a couple people who got in and no one I know got accecpted and decided not to go into the program. I was like that with the NLN test, but that took a lot less time to come in. The KCC acceptance took a long time, so long I forgot about it. When I did get the letter it was a nice surprise.

First aid and CPR last 2 years, so you'll have to retake it before the program is over regardles it's up to you. I actually called a guy who came over to your house and teaches class there. Only catch was you needed a DVD player to play the videos. It was pretty cheap as I remember it too.. I think it was $75 for both classes?

So what are you doing this semester as far as classes are going? Just chilling waiting for KCC to send you the letter?

Oh well this semester I am retaking zoology 142 lecture but I am taking it online, I took it last semester online also, I had the answers but then I lost them, but so far I am getting an A. And then financial aid told me to just get my AA degree because I only needed speech left. so i am taking that, and eng. 272 and study of disease. I am not really studying for the other classes cause that has nothing to do with my nursing...so I don't really care what i get as long as I pass....

Oh do you have the number to that guy for the cpr and first aid by any chance? It would be so much easier for me since I don't have a baby sitter for my daughter...then I can just do it with her next to me..hehe...but i actually did a cpr for infants at kapiolani hospital but didn't get a certificate or anything....it's pretty hard to remember when you really have to do it...i had to do it to my daughter when she was a couple of months old, and that was the most traumatizing experience i ever had to go through...

as far as being an alternate, a lot of nursing applicants may be applying to manoa as well as KCC. if they get accepted into both, they have to turn one down so a spot opens up in either case. the only bad thing is when students don't want to decide right away and send in their acceptance to both. then when they finally decide, it's too late for the program to get an alt up to speed. terrible waste of a nursing student spot. it's happened before so the advisor at manoa strongly asked that i respond right away if accepted into both programs.

so ya there's a variety of reasons why someone might decline their spot in the program. just be sure to go to the mandatory orientation (required for alternates to be eligible if a slot opens). i was an alt for fall 08 but i'm pretty set on doing manoa's BSN instead (wasn't eligible for manoa until spring 09 due to more pre-reqs). i was actually still gonna go to KCC's orientation this past summer as an alt but i got busy with work and kinda forgot :banghead:

lol but yea i'm applying to both for spring 09. if i get into both i'm pretty set on going to manoa so DO NOT miss your chance as an alt at KCC :)

well, that's good to hear that the alt. list will open up if others drop and decide to go to UH instead. I am hoping for that!! Well, is the alt. list like a last minute thing? Cause I am actually gonna be gone like the last 2 weeks in december and come back one week before school starts again....

hmm you might wanna check when orientation during break is... i'm not sure they'll allow you to make it up (it's supposed to be mandatory for accepted AND alternates). i'm not sure how last minute it is though. i know when acceptance letters go out there's a deadline within a week or two. i'd imagine they'd let the alts know asap after that.

I'm pretty sure there were 2 meetings. One was in.. November I believe. Only reason I know this was because I just had to go and get retested for TB a couple weeks ago since they were going to expire before my Kapiolani rotation this semester. The final one is a couple weeks before school if I'm not mistaken, so that's gonna be the one you're cutting close. I know of a couple people who missed the second information session, because by that time the people they accecpt into the program should be set. Just make sure you have a good excuse to tell them.

And mcubed, the alternates getting notified vary. One of my friends got called a couple weeks before school started. She was all set to retake classes and everything and last minute dropped them all to register for nursing.

As far as the CPR thing goes I'll go search for his card, I know I have it someplace. He's a really cool guy and since its a 1:1 session it takes like half the time normal CPR classes take, IIRC.

Hey thanks ap3x6...when you have time.... i know you're really busy with school n stuff.

So after graduating from the ADN, how long does it take to get your bachelors? And then is there like a waiting period all over again for the UHM program?

Oh and the clinicals, it's not a paid thing like a job right? It's kind of like learning on the job for free? I told my brother that, but he doesn't believe me...

KCC grads are guaranteed admission into UHM's ADN->BSN bridge program once they've completed the additional pre-reqs. the program can take 3-4 semesters (you can test out of pathophys saving you 1 semester).

*edit*

actually you may wanna double check with manoa. they let go one of their student advisors/admission directors and now things are kinda screwy. people are getting all kinds of different info now from when we went to pre-nursing advising. bleah.

and no you don't get paid for clinicals. you pay THEM to teach you :p

so is kcc still doing that thing where they pick out like 10 students or so to attend the UH west campus at LCC for the nursing program? I heard that from Wes at the info session a year ago, but not too sure if they are still doing that?

Sorry I haven't responded in a while, clinicals and studying for tests have been hectic. I lost the number but I'll go and ask around on Monday, I'm sure someone still has it.

As far as the LCC thing I don't think so. If I'm not mistaken I heard that they were thinking about having a whole separate program at LCC? Don't quote me on that, just something I heard through the grapevine. If KCC is only accecpting 30 like you said this semester, I highly doubt they are going to send 10 to LCC. Normally its when they accecpt 40+ people that they send some to the other campus.
