Any one in the KCC ADN program

U.S.A. Hawaii

Hi!

I am taking my NLN exam to get into the ADN program at KCC in July for Spring 09, just wanted to know from a students perspective what the program is like.

Thanks!!!

:nuke:

aw crap i forgot KCC's deadline is a month earlier than UHM's....

lol guess i'll try faxing my app tonite and mailing another copy tomorrow (sat). monday's a holiday though so idk. bleah. idk how i missed that. i'm probably gonna end up going to UHM this spring anyways but it's nice to have a backup plan..

Okay well I am also applying for Spring 2009 at KCC Adn's program. I was just wondering if anyone knows what my chances are of getting in. My NLN composite score was a 123, my GPA is 3.5. I also applied for fall 08 but knew that i wasn't going to get but applied anyways with a nln score of 97 and a gpa of 3.07

I have actually brought up my scores alot but i don't know if that is good enough...i am so worried cause the counselors said that the spring 09 semester was there record of applications at 210 and only accepting the top 30 students.

But then I also know another girl who got in with a nln score of 98 and a gpa of 3.7 like 2 years ago....so what are my chances...

I guess it really depends on the quality of people applying. I'd say you have a fighting chance at getting in though. You applied with all your pre-req's and co-req's done? When I applied I had ~3.6GPA and a 14something NLN score, but I was missing 2 classes. Good luck on getting in, it's a pain in the ass but once you get in it takes a lot of stress off... that is until classes start =x.

Yeah I actually finished all of my pre-requs and co-requs like a while ago, I was just retaking them so that I could get better grades. Plus too I was trying to go to HPU but then they gave me the run around about how I need to build my HPU credits which would costs me so much more money...then I was looking on the KCC site and I found the ADN program not knowing they get paid the same.

ARe you finished with the program? How is the program, is it hard? I heard that KCC is actually one of the best schools, even better than HPU!

My friend graduated from HPU last semester and is having a hard time finding a job, I thought that was weird since I thought that nursing was in such high demand.

Well, if you can give me any tips...please let me know...thanks

I'm about halfway through, just starting my OB/peds clinicals now. Yeah, the program is pretty study intensive, but that's the way it should be. Everyone has their own opinions about students from different schools but I've heard that even though KCC is only a ADN program as opposed to a BSN that doesn't really effect if they get hired or not too much.

If you read around the forums you'll notice that new grads are having a hard time finding a job because so many places require experience to apply. I have a couple friends who graduated from the KCC ADN program and they both have jobs, maybe they were just lucky?

Honestly, your GPA and NLN scores don't look that bad. The only other thing I would suggest is if you don't get in my some chance try and retaking both for higher grades? Have you talked to Wes? What did he tell you. He was extremely helpful in letting me know my status and what to expect when entering the program.

I talked to Wes a about 2 months ago, and he told me to take a break on retaking my classes for this semester, but I was hard head and determined so I am still retaking 1 of them to get an A. He told me that I have brought up my scores and gpa tremendously and that a 123 nln is pretty competitve but then it also depends on who applys at the same time.

It's kind of hard cause you don't get a straight forward answer you know...so I am just so anxious to find out, but scared at the same time. It seems like every semester people are scoring higher and getting better gpa's.

I am planning on retaking the nln again if I don't get in for spring 09. Also, I was going to retake my B classes to get an A. I know that when I talked to a different KCC counselor a couple of months ago, she told me why are going to retake your B classes? I just said that I wanted to bring up my GPA so that I can get in. But then she told me to just retake my NLN exam instead of spending the money to retake classes and stuff. So I did that.

I studied really hard for the NLN exam but the one thing i didn't study was OHMS and there was alot of questions on that. Also the english part, for some reason, on the reading comprehension, I think I am doing bad, but then I think I am doing good! It's strange....

Well, good luck to you on your nursing career!! I am crossing my fingers that I will get in. I find out the end of October to the first week of November...so I am praying that I will get in...

OH one more question, the clinicals...is it flexible? Like do you have to do clinicals on the weekends also? or is it just on the weekdays?

Welll...thanks for all your input...:wink2:

Yeah, I was in the same boat. They told me I shouldn't retake classes too, but I decided to anyways. Come to find out half way through the semester I did get accecpted and it was all for nothing, but I guess it was nice to know I had a little insurance policy to back it up.

You know the funny thing is I didn't know anything about those electrical circuits and junk either, but I scored pretty high on the science section. The English section I scored a 70th percentile I thought for sure I was in trouble. Luckily I'm not that bad in science/math.

Haha, I'm sure I'll see you next semester when you're a newbie at KCC. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you.

As far as clinicals, no. They aren't flexible at all. Well, okay, there has been one night clinical from 1400-2300 instead of the normal 0600-1500 but it's not like you can sign up for it, its all based on chance so don't count on it. No weekend clinicals but you normally do have one day off during the week. By off I mean no school, you still need to head out to the hospitals and pick up patient information and do a writeup.

On a side note is KCC doing the whole thing where if you take certian classes it looks "better" on your application or did they stop that? I know when I applied they were thinking about doing that for upcomming applicants, but not sure how that went.

they're also trying to add a healthcare experience aspect to the application process. it was supposed to start for fall08 applicants but it fell through. basically having healthcare experience would further increase your chances of getting in. something to consider if you don't get in for spring 09. double check with them if it'll be added for fall 09.

Hi actually they were suposed to do that, but for fall 09 they are not going to do that either. I don't have any health care experience, only working at a doctors office a couple of years ago...but I was thinking of just getting my cna for now or something then that way i will get some kind of experience for a job later.

Is it true that in your clinicals or class room training, do you really have to give each other a bath? THat is what i heard before, but I thought that was kind of weird to do that for training....

well good luck to you on your nursing career...hopefully I will find out this week and see you in the program next year....i'm crossing my fingers!! Well, i will keep you posted on my results.....thanks for your help!!

oh what semester did you start? how long does it take if you finish all your co-requs before hand? I thought it would take a year...but never asked the counselor that...

Oh the dreaded bed bath. Haha, yeah, we had to do that. You don't get fully naked or anything, you're wearing a swimsuit or something you don't mind getting wet. You get REALLY close with your first semester classmates doing bed baths and physical assessments and what not. You're pretty much with them for 5 hours a day, 4 days a week, for 16 weeks so you can imagine how that goes.

I was attending UH before going to KCC so I had quite a bit of the req's done already. It took me a year + summer only because you have to wait to take Zool141/142/pharm203. The last semester I was pretty much just taking pharm 203 and my humanities because KCC wouldn't accecpt my 300 level classes. I got accecpted into the program in Spr '08.

Oh so that is true! I thought someone was actually joking when they told me that...oh wells at least I know ahead a time...so the first semester, there is no clinicals? only classroom work settings?

Well, I called KCC again today and told me maybe next week or the week after I will be getting the letter....I am just too anxious to find out...

so when do you grad from the program?
