USPHS question

Specialties Government

Specializes in LTC, Cardiac Step-Down.

I've seen many people referring to this branch of the military, but I'm not sure what it actually is, beyond the Public Health Service that has all of the benefits of being in the military but no deployments and a fairly speedy promotion system.

What do nurses in the USPHS actually do? Are they still nurses in military hospitals or do they treat civilians? Do they live on bases? Any info or references would be appreciated :)

USPHS is not part of the military. They are a uniformed service with the same basic benefits, but are not part of the military. USPHS nurses serve at variety of places: NIH, CDC, Coast Guard Bases, Indian Health, Bureau of Prisons, Dept of Immigration Health, U.S. Marshall....
