Starting Salary for VA LPN

Specialties Government

My husband is just starting all the paperwork for the VA. I was curious to know where everyone started on the pay scale.

My husband has been working as an LPN since Dec. 2011....so it will be right around a year when he finally starts at the VA.

He will be working in mental health at the VA and has been working as an LPN in metnal health since April 2012 (so for 9 months by the time he starts at the VA).

Any info will be great. I am trying to figure out if it will be a pay cut for him to work at the VA.

Thanks

My husband starts at the va in a few weeks. He was told he would be working rotating shifts. Day/ night. Does anyone have any experience with this? Also would he get paid the night premium on his night weeks?

What this means that your husband can work either shift. Depending on the needs of his department he could work both shifts in the same week. Also from my experience the nurse's who have seniority who are assigned to the day/night shift will work very few nights and the only time he will work day shifts is vacations etc.

I was told my packet was sent to board for determination will work mental health unit... Waiting on date to do medical and fingerprint... Hope i hear something soon.

If your job in the military is equivalent to the job at the VA you get credit for experience. And you can/may use your military time towards the retirement plan the VA has.

If you are a qualifying veteran you also receive hiring preference.

As for the GS or VA pay system someone else can explain it better but the basics are you are hired a pay grade usually somewhere between GS or VA 4 through 11 if you are not management. Each pay grade has steps. the steps can vary from 1 to 10. If you are a GS 6 step 5 you earn more than a GS 6 step 2.

There is also locality pay. It essentially works something like a cost of living allowance. Your Locality pay is going to be much better for San Francisco than it is for Bismarck ND.

2011 General Schedule (GS) Locality Pay Tables

USA Jobs is advertising LPN slots at GS 6 step 2 it looks like. Salary range is about $27K to $45K per year.

Thanks for info i did qualify for hiring preferance. Also is there a relocation assistance for out of state hires?

It would be in the recruitment announcement. More then likely no, they will not cover relocation since it is not a hard to fill position

How is my military service going affect my vacation?

How is my military service going affect my vacation?

It will not affect your vacation at all. No employeer can make you take vacation or other benefit time if you are a reservist.

If you have past military service it will depend on if they give your credit for the time served. If they give you credit for time served you will earn vacation time passed on the date they give you. When I went to the VA they gave me 3 years as a military nurse towards my seniority. Which did not effect my vacation time since I was title 38 and not a GS 4/5/6. I am not sure when vacation time increase but lets say you have 4 years in the military and the VA gives 1 weeks of vacation for 1-3 years of seniority and 2 weeks for 4-10 years of seniority. If the VA does not give you any credit you would have 1 week of vacation and if they gave you the 4 years of seniority for your military service you would get 2 weeks of vacation.
