New Grads at VA Hospital

Would you recommend a new grad with no experience to work at the VA hospital or would you suggest working at a civilian hospital first and then apply with experience? Any response is appreciated.

I was just informed this past week, from the nurse recruiter, that the Minneapolis VA is not hiring new grads.

This economy is truly frustrating and devastating. I was also told that New Jersey VA is also on hiring freeze. Currently, I am frantically trying to find an additional job or risk having to relocate. However, I hear its only a soft freeze:smilecoffeecup:.

Here is an allnurses thread on the reasons for the hiring freeze: VA Hiring

Please help!!! Any one interviewd before for the VA? I know they have a structured interview. Does anyone know what specific questions they ask? I applied for the Nurse Residency Program at Hines, IL. Did anyone interview there before for a staff nurse position or for the program? I still have to take the NCLEX which is scheduled after my interview. I feel very stressed!!! I appreciate all you advice.

I am a new RN grad and I recently received and accepted an offer at the VA hospital in Tampa. Does anyone have any experience at this facility or advice?

Thank you!

Yes I was surprised myself. It was a very long process (since September for me). I was hired in their acute care internship program. I think they are done hiring for that program as of now. I know they also have a critical care internship program they offer for new grads but I am not sure when they start hiring for that.

Hi, i was wondering what the current work environment is at the Hines VA in IL?! nurse to patient ratio? supplies, resources?

I know everyone has cutback with the recession but was just wondering about the VA. Any nurses out there working there presently?

Would appreciate any or all feedback. Thanks.

I work for Hines VA and I like it alot. I'm sure it depends on the unit you work on as to supplies ratios etc. But the hospital is being renovated one unit at a time. For example; the womans health center just opened and it's all new, state of the art, and beautiful. I'm on one of the older units but I still have all the supplies I need to do my job. The thing I like best about the VA is that it's all computerized and docs enter their own orders. It's very easy to search a patients records for the information you need and all disciplines communicate this way. I'm a computer geek so that alone keeps me loyal. :) The pay is very competitive and the benefits are unmatched.

Thanks so much for your feedback. I had seen a few positions posted and was curious. Is their inpt psych unit big? I noticed a few positions there. I know the benefits are great! Thx again.

I've never worked/floated to psych but I know they have their own building, and I believe it's fairly new. My suggestion to you is to pull up a map of our campus, it's 140 acres... very nice place... and then visit the units your interested in. But do it during normal business hours or you will need an id to come on campus.

Since I've got an appointment for an interview this week, I'd love to hear about the interview process. For one thing, what is a "structured interview"? Any information about the process will be welcome. I think I would like working for the VA. And, I NEED THIS JOB.
