What do you guys think about becoming a navy nurse?

What are the pros and cons as a single young woman joining the navy because she cannot find a RN jobs in this economy?

Specializes in ED. ICU, PICU, infection prevention, aeromedical e.

I was active duty Army for 3 years. I never was assaulted.

I am going back into the Air Force as a nurse. It has taken me a year to of hard work to get this "job".

I think that alot of nurses are joining military now related to job market. That is not my reason. I would not use having no job as my primary reason for seeking a military career.

You need a BSN and good GPA for military service. I was surprised that my GPA came into play when I've been a nurse for 14 years.

You should see a nursing recruiter. Not the guys at store front Navy office. Go to the difference services sites to find a nurse recruiter. Have questions and get them answered. Also, go to the military forum on here. This has been a sanity saver over the last year fighting to get into the military!

Specializes in OB/GYN, Peds, School Nurse, DD.

Just a word about sexual harrassment--That's an issue no matter what field you go into. I've been a non-military nurse for 34 years and I've been sexually harrassed and touched many, many times. Some patients(and doctors) have no boundaries whatsoever. For me, the only way to diminish it was to move into Maternal/Child Health and NICU. I'm in school nursing now(elementary) and I experience NO sexual harrassment.

I don't think i'd let fear of sexual harrassment determine where I work. It's pretty much rampant everywhere.

I agree, I am a civilian RN (hopefully that will change this year, looking into reserves). Coworkers and patients have crossed the line w/ me and other women in my facility. My friend who is a L&D RN said that is one reason she went into that specialty!

Thank you for all you feedbacks! I spoke to a navy nurse recruiter and I do not qualify because I have asthma. I did had patients when I was in my nursing rotations sexually harrassed me, but I had no idea that some doctors are like that too! I hope to gain some experience in the acute care setting and maybe later go into a specialty.

I am also considering joining the Navy as a nurse. My husband is enlisted in the Navy right now though, so I do worry about us being deployed at the same time. We have a 7 year old daughter and plan to try for another baby within the next year or so. Lots to think about, so we will see.

Some recruiters can get you a waiver for your asthma depending on the last time you had an attack.
