i have been working at the va for a little more than 2years now. i was not a new grad when i was hired but i know of sevral new grads that they did hire. the statement that they don't hire new grads is false especially if you have prior medical experience of any type. lpn's can start as a gs4 (new grad without medical experience) and work their way up to gs6. it is definitely worth looking into. good luck! :nurse:

thanks for the info lycro, i was looking for what part of the pay scale lvns started/worked at. i am now trying to get in touch with their nursing recruiter to try and get the ball rolling and at least let them know that i'm very interested in working there. we graduate in august!

they pretty much do not want new grads. it will state it in the job posting either on the va website or usajobs.gov.

this part i know to not be true. the guy i know that started there as an lvn and is now an rn got hired on as a new grad. i know they put in their postings that "new graduate nurses need not apply" but this simply isn't the case. heck, we're even being taught in school that for places like that, send them a resume' and apply anyway because you never know what they might say.

I hope it helped. If after you apply, you don't hear back after a week, don't hesitate to call and check on the status of your application. It will let them know that you are interested. Good luck with your endeavor! Keep me posted on how you make out.

I actually just talked to my neighbor about a job at the VA here in Houston. He did admit that it's difficult to get hired on there, but right now they are hiring A LOT of LVN/LPNs and they are particularly fond of male nurses. Also, if you know someone there that has been there a couple of years, it pretty much comes down to being a shoe-in if you want the job, and I definitely want the job! Also, from what I've heard/read, they pay pretty good for new hires which is actually the opposite of what I was expecting!
