Help please! Looking for info on Navy Nurse Corps

Hello all!

So i just had a few questions regarding the Navy Nurse Corps.

I'm currently enrolled in a BSN program, which I graduate coming up in May. I am contemplating joining the military. I tried to do some research on the Navy Nurse Corps and what kind of options are available to upcoming new grads. Most of what i found was for more like if you're enrolled with a while left to go still or if you're a high school student considering it or if you're already practiciing as a new nurse.

I've already looked into the Air Force, but I wanted to see what the navy has to offer as well. I'm awaiting a recruiter to contact me back, but figured I'd ask for any additional information. i just have a couple questions i was hoping maybe someone could help answer for me:

1. In the AF they have the NTP. Does the Navy has something similar to this? If so, is it really competitive based with a very small number of slots? The AF NTP only had 30 slots for all the applicants. Is the Navy similarly limited?

2. What are the weight and GPA requirements to join? (I have a 3.1 GPA)

3. Do I have to wait a certain period after I graduate or get a certain amount of experience before I can enlist?

4. What is a "DA"?

That's all for now!

Any and all information you can provide would be fantastic! Thanks!

The navy has something called a nurse candidate program (NCP). 65ish slots i believe, but don't quote me on it.

I'm not sure about the weight requirements off the top of my head. I know that I am a 6'0 male and 195 is my max. Google should have some tables for height/weight. For the NCP, min GPA is 3.0.

3. Do I have to wait a certain period after I graduate or get a certain amount of experience before I can enlist?

Pretty much the only way a new nurse will get in the military as a nurse is through a program like NCP. It is incredibly difficult and a really lengthy process to do direct assession for anyone, much less a nurse with no exp.

4. What is a "DA"?

Direct Assession. Commissioning straight from civilian world to military.

***I have only just turned in my packet for NCP and only answered your questions on what I understand to be accurate through my research. Please, anyone feel free to correct any wrong information***

The info I have is the same as what willhigg6 posted (only I was told 59 spots for 2012). If you google height and weight requirements, you can find the table to use for your age group.

Direct accession is a long and often times frustrating process, but it can be done as a new grad. I started the application process 2 years ago, graduated in May of 2011, pro-rec'd September 30, and was sworn in last night :)

Best of luck, and don't give up or get discouraged. I came to believe it was all part of the process. Mental perseverance is just as important as any physical conditioning.

I am currently applying for the NCP and I concur will what willhigg6 answered. :) . My kit will be reviewed at the next board! Excited!

Also, as for seats, there are currently around 25 left for 2013. I got this information from my recruiter this morning. She said they had only 10 or so seats left as of last month, but 16 people declined their seats after being accepted.

Good luck.
