Becoming a Nurse in the Air Force

Hello Everyone, I have a question :lol2: ...I'm currently in the process of enlisting in the Air Force and want to further my education. I currently hold an associates in arts and want to get a bachelors in nursing. My question is how easy is it to get your bachelors through the Air force, i know that the AF college is going to be offering bachelor's programs next year. I'm going to try to put in my "wish list" big cities so that maybe I have more options, can anyone help? maybe give me some advice...I have talked to some military nurses in the army and other services and they told that it is a good choice to have the military pay for it and that is feasable but some other people are telling me to do my bsn before hand. Not sure i really want to start my military training right away rather than waiting 2 years to complete my bsn, after all i'm already getting an age waiver, don't want to loose the opportunity to join by waiting...thanks to all :thankya:

I apologize for the wordy posts I'm just happy to find someone locally going through the same thing I am. :yeah::monkeydance:

I have been searching for anything that had to do with NECP for quite some time now. I know of one girl up at HQs who applied for the NECP this year. I hope nothing but the best for all of us. The wordy the messages, the better. I am going to be on leave the whole month of June so I hope someone gives me a call with either good or bad news.

Do you work in MDG? I'm actually a COMM troop and work over in TACC. I'll keep you psoted if no one from your unit does but I'm sure they'll give you a call even if your on leave.

Have you for class yet? If so are you on A or B schedule? I'm taking Path and Nursing Research this summer so I went ahead and registered for Fall classes (w/ a prayer that I'll actually ge p/u for one of the programs).

I am at the wing....LRS.....I haven't registered yet but the Academic Advisor said that because the spot was already reserved (Seat's Taken), I can wait until I find out if I got accepted. If I do get in, I will have an extremely busy JUNE and JULY.....I won't feel bad doing school stuff if I am on leave.....I would be too happy because I got accepted.

I guess I'm just impatient LOL. I wish they would put out stats for the NECP selects like they do for AECP so we could get an idea of how our packages stack up to past selects. I wonder how many people apply each year. The FAQs said they will select 30-50 candidates this year even though they won't be doing spring starts. Ohh what I wouldn't give to be a fly on the wall to see how one of these boards works.

my husband applied to both AECP and NECP this year and we are waiting for the board results to come out for AECP (after all this time a few days seems forever)... I'm keeping my fingers crossed..

Anyway, I wanted to share some info he got from the Chief Nurse at his hospital regarding NECP...

she said that as of the deadline, AFPC has received 27 completed packages and they are still working on 14 more to verify completion and if they meet requirements completely... so that makes a total of 41 applications (if the 14 are actually complete).. they have 50 spots... so they are either going to extend the application deadline, accept late ones or the chances are pretty damn good everyone would be accepted (I'm hoping for the latter). She also said that 72 had stated that they were going to apply, so I guess it will all depend on whether they are willing to accept late packages. I think it would be unfair to those who did put them together on time.

faye--That is great news.......I hope that the few NECP'ers that are on here are the ones in that "27" pile. If you don't mind me asking, what base are you guys at. I didn't get that kind of info during my CN interview. The CN here at my base was awesome. He took into account that I have been deployed twice so he didn't go into detail about that. Once again, I hope that all of us get in and when we are all sitting in COT, we can talk about the good ol days.

We are at Elmendorf AFB in Alaska. The Chief Nurse was great up here as well, and my husband definitely got a lot of information from her about being a nurse in the AF.

Even though we applied to both programs, I'm really hoping that my husband gets accepted to AECP so that we don't have to wait for another month for results! it feels like a year... but either way, I hope that everyone on here gets in. It definitely makes the wait a lot more bearable knowing that other people are also going through it.

I actually just finished my first nursing semester at the University of Alaska, Anchorage and it would be great if my husband could start this fall so he can use all my books. NECP/AECP is great, but $600 for books/supplies won't even cover the first semester! Good luck to you and everyone else, let's hope we run into each other in the future :-)

I also applied to AECP/NECP this year. Thru chance and miscommunication I know I didn't get picked up this year so another month long wait for the NECP results. I did hear that there were 44 of 68 applicants selected. So good luck to your husband on both programs.

I'm w/ you on extending the deadline. I know they want to fill the 50 slots but I think it would be unfair to the 41 individuals who paid attention to the guidelines to make sure that their packages were in on time. Really I wonder how that would work since the board meets next week? Seems a little last minute. Personnally I'm going to hope they go with filling the slots from however many of the 41 that meet requirements and have complete pkgs.

Congrats on completing your 1st semester of NS. How cool is that for you and the hubby to be literally sharing that journey. I've read alot of threads on here about how only another NS student can understand what a NS goes through.

I guess we will be waiting along with you 2012RN2b. A disappointing non-select for AECP. I hope NECP goes better for my husband, as well as you. Good luck!

Sorry to hear that your Hubby was also a non-select. AECP doesn't seem to be very kind to nursing students this year. I can't wait to see the stats. I hear non-selects can have their commanders call for feedback on their package. I will definitely be taking advantage of that. Onwards and Upwards I guess NECP FY10 here we come. Good luck to all of us.
