2011 Air Force Nurse Enlisted Commissioning Program (NECP) Applicants

Hi All~

There was a thread for last year's NECP applicants but I thought I would start one for 2011. Anyone out there applying to the Air Force's AY 2011 Nurse Enlisted Commissioning Program? We have a page on Facebook as well, but I wanted to see if there was anyone else on here as well....

I was a 2010 NECP select but didn't get in to either nursing school that I applied to. That was the worst thing in the world (having to decline my NECP seat). One school had me calculated at a 3.66 GPA (they didn't accept a lot of my classes) and the other had me at a 3.70. In both cases, it wasn't a high enough GPA (the cutoffs were 3.74 and 3.77). I have taken more classes since and have brought my GPA to a 3.74 currently (still have two classes to finish up, but they aren't NECP prereq's); if I get an A in both (which I think I will), it will only bring me to a 3.76 (I have 86 credits currently so each A only brings up my GPA 1/100 of a point but a B can drop me 1/10 of a point). I have been accepted to Univ. of Missouri, St. Louis already and have applied to five other schools: Univ of South Florida, Univ of Central Florida, Univ of FL, Florida State U, and Univ of Maryland. I don't want to end up in the same boat that I was in last year with an NECP seat and no school so I decided to apply to a few schools.

Anyhoo, hopefully there are some more 2011 NECP hopefuls here. Last year it was really nice to have others to talk to who were in the same boat. :)

Hello!

I recently JUST started my pre-reqs for NECP and so glad I found this site. I also found the FB page as well and sent a request. All of this info is so useful as I didn't know how difficult it can be to find Universities meeting the criteria of NECP. Since I just started my pre-reqs I don't plan on applying yet, hopefully next year or 2013. Good luck to all the NECP applicants this year! When will the results be annouced?

Hi bustersgurl! Results will be out around 9 June (Thursday)...three days! :I I have been holding my breath since last year! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask (here or on FB)...everyone is super helpful because we all want each other to succeed. Good luck to you when you are ready to apply! :)

Hello. I'm new to this site. I stumbled over it researching NECP results. Kynchanted, did you receive 9 June as the date from Mr. Baker? I finally decided to call Nurse Education myself yesterday and a female there stated that the results should be posted around Thursday of next week. I'm just curious. I'm getting VERY anxious! This is my first year to apply and if selected, I will attend The University of Oklahoma for nursing school. I hope everyone that applied to NECP this year was selected. Good luck!

Hello,

I have made the decision to apply to NECP so I will have a bunch of questions for you, thanks for letting us know

Bustersgurl, I plan to apply by 2013 also, what schools are you looking into?

Hi and welcome! :) Yes, you are right, the results have been pushed back until the 16th because someone didn't pick up the packages and deliver them to the director in time for release on the 9th. Oh well. This wait is so excruciating! I hope everyone who applied and who really wants to be a nurse is selected as well. Well only five more days (four if you don't count today or the release date). Good luck to you! :)

Does anyone know where to find the list of selectees for NECP 2011? I know it came out yesterday, but it is not posted on the kx.afms site where the guildelines are posted.

I'm situated right now where everyone has shipped out but me, and there is noone to give me a "yes" or "no" on whether I got accepted. I just finally got an acceptance letter from my college, so it's vital to know if I can take the slot or not.

Hi Everyone!

Can those of you who have been accepted, and/or accepted then denied tell me what rank you were when you applied? I am not in the Air Force at all, and I am having a hard time deciding on joining. My main goal is to become a nurse - I've been told it is not a good idea to base entry to the military on one dream. However, I feel like if I want it bad enough then I should be willing to take the risk - you dont know unless you try! And I am happy to give four years of my life or more to my country. I've also been told that entry to this program is more based on rank than grades and such (more political). I want to join, promote as quickly as possible to E-4 and then apply. Am I taking a shot in the dark or what? Like I said, AD people I've talked to..say it is impossible... :(

Hi! I was accepted last year as well as this year for NECP (long story why I applied two years in a row). I am an E-6. As for joining the military solely to apply to NECP or to become a nurse, it depends on if you want to be a nurse soon or can wait a few years. You have to be an E-4 by or during the board month (which is usually in May) to apply, and it takes an average of three years to make E-4. If you get it early (called below the zone), you can get it at 30 months. That's assuming that you come in as an E-1. Not sure about if you come in as an E-2 or E-3, I think you can get E-4 in about 28-30 months if you come in higher ranking. I came in as an E-1, so that is what I know the most about. Besides being an E-4, you will have to get your school done in the meantime, and that is where being active duty can get difficult. If you have certain jobs, you could be working 12-hour shifts, which will make taking classes a little more difficult than if you were only working a regular 8-hour shift. Plus your first two years in the military will be spent learning how to be in the military and learning your job, so usually you aren't permitted to take any classes during that time. Once you become a 5-level, you can start taking college classes. If you want to be competitive for nursing school, you have to keep your GPA up. I was denied admission to two schools last year with a 3.7 GPA. If you are working a lot, this may mean that you can only take one class at a time to make sure your GPA stays high. I don't think rank means that much as far as applying to NECP, you usually just don't see lower ranking people apply because it takes awhile to get it all done. As far as NECP selection being based more on rank than grades, I am not sure I agree with that. It is based on the whole person concept. There is an essay you have to write stating why you want to a nurse, an interview with the Chief Nurse, a letter of recommendation from your supervisor with your commander's and first sergeant's endorsements, there is your science GPA and overall GPA, and the letter of acceptance from a nursing school. They also look at your fitness test scores and your performance reports. A lot goes in to the selection process. While a higher ranking person is seen as more likely to stay in the military for longer than the required six years if accepted to NECP, there is more that goes in to the selection process than rank itself. I hope this helps some. While NECP is an awesome program, if you are in a hurry to become a nurse then joining the military may not be the best option. But like you said, if you are willing to give a few years, I would definitely recommend joining, just be sure you get a job that will allow you the time to take classes. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask, and good luck! :)

Thank you thank you kynchanted!

That was silly of me. I should have given you more information about myself before making you take so much time to type all that! I very much appreciate it!

I would enter as an E-3 because I have an AA complete. As for prereqs and co reqs, according to the requirements of NECP, I have all of that done. :sigh: I am 25...I know..I am ancient to enter enlisted...but life changes have forced me to take a look at different options, especially in regards to my career goals. I am hoping my age will help me get through - BEING SO WISE AND ALL!! OR I will be teased and teased at basic - hopefully I wont be alone! HAHA. (Other courses needed would depend on if a school requires something else, right?) If i do enlist...i was thinking about trying to stay medical, just for a better chance of the CN interview....what do you think of that? Does it matter if you are from a different unit? Do you think it will benefit me if people in the medical field know me? I remember reading in a thread that some folks came from Admin and Computers.. I ask because I am actually looking into anything medical, space ops, or linguistics! I read about BTZ! That is definitely something I would go for! What do you recommend doing in order to achieve something like that? VOlunteer, great at your job? SOrry I am Clueless! :clown:

The only part that would be a problem is GPA...I only have a 3.66 (I know because I recently applied to CSUS's RN program. and I had to calculate it) MY GPA in sciences is much higher 3.8(calc class and PE class got me down, PE!? I know THEY WANTED ME to write an essay! I was young and said forget it! DANG!!) It was just the expectations of the schools you applied to that denied you w a GPA of 3.7, right? Was it a minimum bar set, or was it based on the GPA's of the students applying with you? Which two schools were those? (Sac State makes it competitive by basing it on the highest person who applies GPA along with other factors and the TEAS Score, which my score sucks right now so I HAVE to take that again...)

AS far as it goes for applying to schools, assuming I go in and get a slot with NECP, is it any school in the US? Or does it depend on the location of your duty station??

Thank you thank you for all of your help! You have really helped me in my decision to join! I look forward to hearing from you. I would also like to tell everyone how delighted I am to read that you are all so supportive of each other. :yeah: It is really refreshing! TRUST ME.

Hi! I take it you are from Cali? Me too (San Diego). One of the schools I applied to was San Fran State U; they waitlisted and then denied me admission. The other school was University of South FL (same thing happened there). You are right; it all depends on the applicant pool. If the school is admitting 50 students and the top applicant has a 3.5, then anyone with a 3.5 or thereabouts is getting in. Unfortunately SFSU's cutoff was a 3.70 (they actually had me at a 3.66 since they didn't accept all of my classes), and USF's was a 3.77 (I only had a 3.70). This year I was denied admission to Florida State and University of FL since they take their own students over transfers. Luckily I was accepted to three other schools (as well as NECP), so I am starting University of MD, Baltimore in August.

Since you already have your prereqs done, you can do two things as far as school goes: you can either apply to schools that require more than just a simple app to get in (i.e. schools that require the TEAS or HESI as part of the admission process) because if you do really well on it that will supplement your GPA some OR you can take a few more classes to bring your overall GPA up a little more. Your GPA is good enough for NECP for sure, but from my own experience it seems it could be a little higher for nursing school admission. WITH THAT SAID, if you look at schools that are mil-friendly (if you join) or schools in areas that people are not necessarily fighting to get into (everyone wants to live in CA and FL, hence why their programs are harder to get into; they have more applicants), you may find yourself with many acceptance letters and schools to choose from. Again, I am only speaking from my own experience.

As for getting a medical job in the military, YES, it will help. With that said, if you are comm or another career field it just means you may not have the same contacts that you would if you were medical. If you could get a med tech job, that is even better because you will have a medical background when you get into school. I am dental lab (I don't even get to work with patients), but being in the medical group made it a lot easier to interact with my Chief Nurse and even allowed me to shadow labor and delivery nurses at our hospital here. But again, that doesn't mean that being a comm troop will hurt you or anything careerwise. Many NECP selects are non-medical.

As for where you can go to school, you can go anywhere that has an Air Force ROTC detachment or has a cross-town agreement with a school with an AFROTC detachment. If you google Air Force ROTC detachment locator, the website will come up and show you the schools that are accepted across the country. The only other school limitations are that the tuition has to be under $15K a year (that is for full-time attendance, including summers) and the program has to be completable within two years. Most schools will give you in-state tuition if you are military, which drops the tuition significantly (CA gave me a very hard time about this even though I am a CA resident because I don't live there). I would give you the website but my wireless mouse ran out of batteries and I am not too savvy with the built-in one on the laptop keyboard (I can't copy and paste with it).

I hope I didn't miss anything....

Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions. I still think that the military isn't the quickest way for you to become a nurse, but it is definitely one of the best ways if you have patience and the time to wait until you qualify rankwise. I am a bit biased on this, but what other company will pay you to go to school AND pay for your school at the same time? :)

Hi again!

yes I am from Cali! Northern Cali...sadly. (Yuba City to be exact, but no one ever knows where that is.) I LOVE Southern California!San Diego is beautiful!

AND CONGRATS ON GETTING IN!!!

I do not mind the wait at all. I really want to be a nurse! I have had to work and go to school since I started college, so to know I will be able to focus on one thing and get it done is worth the wait.

On another note!:

I am guessing you have a mac...??? If so, highlight what you want to copy, then press and hold the "apple" key then "C" to copy,

to pase: press and hold "apple" key, then "V" to paste! (sometimes can be difficult with pictures/images that dont want to be highlighted.)

The only other question was, in your experience, what has an Airman done to get the BTZ thing? I've read about it...Typically people who get this, what is the difference between him/her and someone who doesn't qualify?

Also,

Is there a facebook page for NECP? I couldn't find it!

Thanks again!
