Would you accept this call out excuse?

Thursday night I got a call at 7pm from a night shift CNA saying she was tired and didn't sleep that day and couldn't come in for her shift 11-7.

I told her that I that I would write up the call-out slip, but I didn't think being tired was an acceptable excuse. I got a string of profanities and then "fine, I'll come in"

I called my DON and double checked with her and she backed me up....but wow....if you are going to call out, come up with a better excuse, please!

I agree with the posters who say if you want a vacation then schedule one, we are professionals and if you are on the schedule, we expect you to plan your life so you can make it to work on time. Unfortunately that will mean you might have to leave a party or friend's house when you are still having a good time so you are able to work. It is part of growing up and being responsible. Your "mental health day" now means I will get mandated for another 8 hrs, go home for 7.5 try to eat, shower and sleep (forget about being a mom and a wife) before my next shift. Believe me, there are certain staff who call in all the time and it really is frustrating for the rest of us.

Ok. How about when you know that you can not cone because if N/V/D. No outbreak in unit. Your told to take some meds and cone in? Oh remember another nurse called in in less than two hours. Got yelled at. went to ER. ended up in CCU for 6 weeks. Yep same person that wrote up another after being on a vent.
