Transfering from private liberal arts college to a school for my nursing prereqs

U.S.A. Georgia

Published

I am a first-year student and have decided to pursue a job as nurse practitioner. Since my school doesn't offer a nursing program, I plan to transfer asap.

Are there any in particular you recommend? I'm considering Georgia State.

What about Mercer, Emory (high cost), Kennesaw?

Also, does doing pre-nursing at a school help your chances of being accepted for their nursing program (BSN)?

Thanks in advance!

I go to Georgia State University. They do not show any preference towards their own pre-nursing students here when considering acceptance to their BSN program. All they care about is your program GPA and TEAS scores. Only classes listed as pre-reqs for nursing school factor into your program GPA.

Can you please tell me how easy it is to get into the nursing pre-reqs as a freshman transfer?

I actually transferred in myself, and I did not have too much trouble! You will have the most trouble getting into Anatomy courses at GSU as a freshman because you will be last to register, and they tend to fill up VERY quickly. Did you plan on taking the traditional or ACE route? ACE has a few more pre-reqs than traditional. I took Biology I + lab, English 2, American History, and microbiology my first semester at GSU with little trouble. What classes are you interested in?

Oh wow, I felt odd for wanting to transfer in. I decided a week ago that nursing is more suitable to me than optometry or dentistry and I already feel so behind. This decision has given me so much stress over the past few days because I don't want to waste further time and money.. If I'm not mistaken, registration for Spring 2013 has already begun and since I'm applying for Spring 2013, I'm so worried that all the classes will be full and then I'll be even more behind..

I am planning on a traditional track because I am hoping admissions will be easier than ACE. Are you on the ACE track (I don't remember history electives are a pre-req)? I am hoping to get into anatomy, math, English, and microbiology. Please, don't be full!

I am applying to the ACE and traditional track. ACE is more difficult once you are in the program, but I have heard people with lower GPA/TEAS scores get in ACE because most people are afraid to apply. If you get accepted to ACE, you can actually switch to the traditional track if you think it is too difficult. Spring registration has started, yes. I just checked microbio and English 1 for you, and there are still quite a few seats available in those classes! Which math are you looking into? Anatomy looks full but you can try to overflow into the course after this semester has ended, or wait for it to be dropped. A lot of students DO drop classes, especially anatomy! My anatomy class went from 140 students to 60 pretty quickly.Don't worry about being "behind." I was worried about that too when I transferred, because I was a chemical engineering major and had to start over completely. It's never too late to do what you love. :)

Ahh darn. Being the newbie that I am on this forum, I am not allowed to reply to your message. Do you mind emailing me at [email protected]? And thank you so much!! Your input in my thread has been very helpful. I don't know personally know anyone going the nursing route and so I feel rather clueless.. Oh, so are you a second degree entry into the nursing program? Also, I wish you the best of luck in your application process! :D

Can you please tell me your overall opinion of pre-nursing at GSU? Do you recommend the school (classes, profs)?

I received AP credit for Calc BC and I need to look into whether that replaces math. I still have no idea whether AP credit can replace prereqs.. and right now the chemistry class I'm taking is equivalent to a higher level chem class than the prereq. Gotta find out whether I still have to take GSU chem 1. Ah the hassle of transferring.. >

I just sent you a private message about GSU, but I can e-mail you if you'd rather. AP credit DOES replace pre-reqs. I was a chemical engineering major, so I took calculus as well. Nursing school only requires you take math modeling or college algebra, but they took my calculus credit for math instead of those classes because it was a higher level class. The same thing happened with my chem class--chemical engineers take the more intensive chem (principles of chem), but nursing majors only need survey of chemistry. Whether or not you will get the credit depends on the school you are coming from, though...

Oh, and no, I'm not a second-degree. I just have a LOT of random college credits, haha. :) Thanks for the luck, I definitely need it.
