Non-nursing question about Floyd County

U.S.A. Georgia

There is a strong possiblity that my family will relocate to Rome in the next two years. I am trying to research schools as I have 3 boys (10,7,3). If you live in Floyd - what is your opinion of Rome City schools vs. Floyd county schools? I see where the Armuchee district looks good, but I just wondered about the city schools. Thanks!

On the SAT - I believe they added a writing section since you took the SAT (and since I took it back in 1988). So that adds more points. It used to be 800 for Math and 800 for English and that was it.

What about the middle school. It was given only 6 out of 10 starts on great schools dot com. I know middle schools typically struggle - but that is something I was concerned about. I looked at the elementary schools on great schools for Rome City. Some are low like 4 out of 10 and others I believe were 8 or 9 out of 10. Thanks for all the insight!

Unfortunately I can't really help you on Elementary & Middle schools b/c I didn't spend too much time in them at Rome. I know Armuchee's Elementary & Middle schools are both fairly new (10 years old for Elem, 5 years old for Middle), but age doesn't imply quality of teaching. Rome Middle school is attached to the High school, and if Rome High has really transformed into the kick-booty academic school that it is today, Rome Middle can't be that far behind. That's just my :twocents:

Rome Middle is a great school. My there main issue right now is that the principle has changed 3 times in 4 years. I know that the teachers there are great and I still see them a good bit. Middle school is in general hard it is just such a change and at Rome they go from small elm schools to a huge middle school, but the way they teach, in Teams, it still feels very small. The middle school's speacial ed program is also wanderfull. I have to say that a lot of the people that were in my son's elm school, took there kids out of the Middle school and sent them to Unity the local Christion school, but the majority of those kids were back at Rome by 8th grade. Rome Middle is only 7th and 8th grade so it is not as diverse as the other middle schools. I know that Armurchee has 6th, 7th and 8th grade at there school and again is a good school. My BF kids are doing very well there. My suggestion still stands to come to Rome and go into the schools and see what they are like before you make up your mind.

I moved back to Rome after being gone for 16 yrs. I'm not a Rome native, my ex-husband was in mgmt. in the paper industry here and he lost his job, so we had no choice but to move.

I raised my three (3) sons here in Rome. My youngest went to West End Elementary and the older two attended Rome High. I couldn't recommend a better public school system than Rome. The teachers really DO care about their students and are in frequent communication with parents. If your child is excelling in a subject, you will hear from his teacher; if your child is having problems, you will hear from his teacher. My sons all went on to college with high SAT scores and are now successful in their respectful careers.

NOW....as far as nursing jobs are concerned.......I would advise you to STAY AWAY FROM FLOYD MED. CTR....it is the 'public' hospital and is sooooo understaffed. As for Redmond, I have friends who have worked there and say it's not much better...the nurse/pt. ratios are better, but it's Primary Nursing with no CNAs to help. I was VERY fortunate to get a job as Nsg. Supv. at the only Adult Day Health Program in NW GA which is located in Rome. My next choice would be Harbin Clinic, the largest privately owned medical facility in Rome. It's first class!!

I hope this helps you some and please let me know if you have any further questions about Rome...I'll be glad to help all I can!

Thanks so much for the great information. We were in Rome last weekend checking things out. We saw Rome Middle/High and the Armuchee schools. We looked through a few Armuchee neighborhoods: Battle Farm and Northwoods. I'll certainly keep the information in mind. I had read that West End was the best elementary school in Rome City Schools. We figure we will tell our RE agent we want either West End district or Armuchee. Thanks again.

You're very welcome for the info. I'm only speaking from my own experience in Rome, both with the school system and places to work as a nurse. I worked at Floyd for 3 years, so I know first hand that it would be my last choice to go back and work there. Don't get me wrong, I had a good rapport with my manager, but her hands were tied as far as staffing was concerned. The moral there was terrible, which I'm sure you know, tends to be contagious. My husband hated for me to come home every evening griping and complaining about work. Now, I'm coming home smiling and telling funny stories that my clients and co-workers have shared with me. Even though my work is very challenging and I have to wear several 'hats' during the course of the day, it's very rewarding to be able to know that I've helped and made a difference in someone's life.

I wish you the best and would look forward to getting to know you better, if you should end up moving to Rome or not.

Take care and happy house/school hunting!

Hope to hear from you again soon....

Jane

Do you feel like Redmond is very supportive when it comes to continuing education? I'll be a new BSN RN and would like to be somewhere where they encourage us getting certification in certain areas. Also, I'll probably being working nights - a better schedule for my children. Do you work nights? or have you?
