GSU Fall 2012

U.S.A. Georgia

Not sure if there's one of these started already, but it's still pretty far off, so I thought I'd make one. Have any of you guys taken the TEAS yet? If not, where are you taking it? I didn't see any dates listed for GSU.

@Brazilian nurse: You definitely have some great options to fall back on. Now would be the time for you to consider the differences in the programs @ GPC and Mercer. They are both 2 yrs., but you'll come out with a BSN @ Mercer vs. ADN @ GPC. I'm not saying whether one is better than the other (both allow you to be an RN, which is what really matters), but it seems like many hospitals are hiring fewer ADNs. This is just what I've been hearing through the grapevine, so I could be wrong. Of course, you'd have to consider the commute and prices of the programs, and what the time commitment would be like for you. Regardless of your decision, I wish you the best of luck!

As far as the wait list goes, I haven't been able to find much concrete info on this site about how many typically get accepted from the WL each year. I don't think I've seen a post from an actual WL acceptee, but there have been posts suggesting that at least a couple of folks get in from the WL each year. Maybe somebody else could chime in.

Thanks for the input troop! I think I will probably go to Mercer and get my BSN in 2 years.. I'm just thinking about GPC because I wouldn't have to take as many credit hours per semester and I think I'd have a little bit more time with my baby.. that's basically what I'm thinking about. and then I could continue studying and get my BSN.. it would just take me a little bit more time (probably an extra year)..

As far as the WL, my husband said I should call and ask how many people got in last semester out of the WL.. I might do that.. If I can find out some info I'll definitely post here.. If anybody knows more details please share.

I agree that GPC's program would probably have a more flexible schedule than Mercer. But ultimately, you have to decide what's best for you and your situation. Kinda makes me wish I had applied to more than one school, LOL. I was interested in accelerated programs, and only GSU, Emory, and KSU offered them. Emory is out of my $$ range (although I received a master's degree from there; it's a great school!), and KSU is way too far for me to commute to. GSU's ACE program just made the most sense for me and my situation.

And yeah, I guess it didn't cross my mind to actually CALL the school today to ask them how many folks get in from the WL, ha ha. I think, deep down, I don't really expect them to give an honest answer - I don't know why I feel that way though!:lol2:

where do you live troop? i live close to emory.. i know where you are coming from regarding applying just to gsu.. makes total sense!! and at the end of the day you will see that your plan will work out!! i really hope you get in this semester out of the wl.. and i think you have great chances of getting in! you are #4!!! :) but even if you don't get in it's pretty much guarantee that you will get in next semester.. you also have kids, right? how old are they? how do you plan to manage an accelerated program and taking care of your kids? do they go to daycare? i'm so nervous about having to leave my baby full time and taking him to daycare.. :(

you are right about their answer regarding the wl.. lol

I live in Henry County, just south of the DeKalb County line. I actually used to work at CDC, right next to Emory, up until last December. And, like I said, I went to Emory, so I'm very familiar with the school. It's a great school, but I already owe them enough in student loans to try again. :)

My little ones are 18 months and 3 years old. They go to daycare. Of course, in a perfect world, I'd be able to stay home with them AND earn an income AND work (I actually like the intellectual challenge of working), but I haven't figured out how to do all of that. Fortunately, I have a supportive husband who's agreed to support us while I'm in school. It will be challenging to try to figure out childcare, since he's also going to school at night and working during the day, but we will do our best to make it work.

How old is your baby? I understand how hard it is to be away from your children all day, especially when they're really young. I do miss my kids during the day, but I know that they are well cared for at their daycare. They also do really well socially by being around other children.

One more thing...are any of you current GSU students involved in the Nursing Students @ GSU organization?

Hi troop! My baby is 9 1/2 months old. He also does well socially even though he still doesn't go to daycare.. but I try to go out with him on playdates as much as possible.. I'm just concerned about daycare sickness and having to miss school etc.. but anyway.. I guess everybody figures out and we will too! :) Do you know when they start calling out of the WL? I can't wait to hear the good news that you received a call from them!!! :) I really think this is gonna happen!!!!! :)

I still haven't heard anything yet!! I was in the GPC Nursing program for 2 semesters. All I can say is if you have another option go somewhere else. The program is pretty rigorous. I'm sorry for all that got wait listed, but at least your low on the list. I'm still keeping my fingers cross hoping they feel sorry for me for wait listing me 2x. I doubt it but doing anything to keep my hope alive.

I hope you get some good news soon, kuhelski. I still can't believe you were waitlisted twice! :-/

What was it about the GPC program that didn't appeal to you? How do you expect GSU to be different? Just curious.

Make wait list #3!!!

GPC has a good program, but the way they run the program is pretty messed up. Even though it is an associate degree don't let that fool you. It is very demanding and you will have to study as much as any BSN program.

Hey kuhelski, I'm definitely taking into consideration your comments about GPC program, but I just wanted to understand a little bit better why do you say it's pretty much as demanding as a BSN program.. if you don't mind sharing I would really appreciate it as I'm in the process of deciding where I'm going. As far as I understand, at GPC I'd have to take about only 9 credit hours per semester (considering that I'm done with all my core courses and pre-requisites) as opposed to around 15 credit hours at a BSN. So that to me seems like a lighter load...
