I'm just wondering how concerned I should be about a 20 year old DUI on my background report. I've already asked my school advisor and the H.R. department of one of the clinical sites and they both told me it shouldn't be a problem at all. My only real concern is with the state BON. Do any of you "know someone" who has been in my situation. I have already called the number on the BON website and the answer was "You will need to send in an application and let the board review it." Mindless Bureaucrats!.

I'm not really worried that they will flat say NO, I'm still going ahead with school. But what kinds of hoops might they ask me to jump through. Could I show them my perfect credit history, the fact that I held the same job for 15 years after college, married a public school teacher... I think the tone of the woman on the phone has given me a really bad feeling about the kind of people I will have to deal with.

Please share your thoughts. I've read a lot of very comforting and informative posts on this site.

I had a DUI 2o years before I applied for my RN license. I had to include documentation regarding the DUI. I wrote a letter stating my "virtues" and that alchohol had not been a problem since, as noted by my record. I had no delay in the processing of my application. I received my ATT and my license as quickly as the balance of my class. I live in California and received my license this past February (2009). Good luck!!

Im a Ga nurse who had a lapse of judgement and got a DUI when I was 21 years old. When I applied to the Ga board of nursing for my liscense, I had to send doucumentation stating that it was taken care of and that I had fullfilled my obligations reguarding the DUI. I had to send a letter stating the circumstances of the DUI and that I had learned from this experience and it was no longer a problem, along with letters of reference from my instructors. The board reviewed my application, and their was no delay in getting my liscense. Good luck, it should not be a problem!!

I don't think it's going to be a problem for you. 20 years ago was a long time, especially if you don't have anything else.
