Yes! Maybe it won't be so bad..

I downloaded a fundamentals quiz app and I have gotten 80% of the questions right just from thinking about the questions and choosing why I think is right. I don't have my books yet so I thought it'd be fun. It also gives the rationale for them. I have been so scared about the nursing exam questions due to previous threads that I have come across. Im scared i wont do good and wont be able to critically think like a nurse. But Maybe it wont be as bad, since I'm doing pretty okay with them right now? If so, then it gives me a little hope and encouragement!

Any other newly accepted students nervous about the critical thinking involved?!

Made thats a good thing, because I'm one of those people who want to see/know the WHOLE picture of problem. I don't want to be told "so and so works this way.." I want to know WHY it works that way and I have to be able to see/know the whole thing to be able to fully understand it. I'm probably just way too inquisitive for my own good..

Don't worry guys and gals! Critical thinking is nothing more than just reasoning (and common sense like the poster above stated). If you can look at answer choices and reason them out --as in, go through each one and determine why it might be right or wrong--you will do fine in a nursing program. It also involves applying knowledge you have learned, which is nothing more than just using that knowledge to reason out answers.

Thanks!!

For me (& some classmates) the "critical thinking" is the easiest part. If you normally do well at reasoning and standardized tests you'll do fine. This was the thing that most students had the most trouble with though. (all of us answer "reasoners" aren't as good at memorization and found Pharmocology with it's many drugs to memorize more difficult). Those that struggle a bit more with critical thinking tend to be people who are use to acing tests by memorizing and then answering direct questions. It took them a little longer to learn how to study for nursing school tests but a little practice and most can do fine. Get a good NCLEX prep book like Saunders if you're worried about it and practice doing questions that correlate to whatever you're studying.
