What do I do now?

Nursing Students General Students

i have finished all my pre & co reqs. i applied for the fall nursing program and was accepted as an alternate. so it is anyone' guess if i will actually make it in. what i need to know is; what do i do for a back up plan? i went to an advisor and he was not much help. i want to do something that will compliment the nursing program and not be a total waste of money. if i don't get in i will apply again for the spring session. any ideas on what i can take? i was thinking about phlebotomy??

Does your school offer an assessment class? I know that our school offers a class that has been recommended to incomming nursing students and students that have weak assessment skill. That may be something that you want to look into, or maybe medical terminology. My girlfriend was a phlebotomist before starting school and she said that it helped better know where the veins and arteries are located so she felt she had more options when starting her IV's. You can also sit back and relax because that is something that rarely happens once you start school!! Good luck getting in!!! :D

While waiting for an opening, I went to work for United Blood Services; they do blood banking. I was trained as a phlebotomist and went on blood drives; it was a hoot! Learned alot and had fun. I think the medical terminology course suggestion would be good as well. I am in an accelerated program and there is so much coming at us that I wish I had more real basic stuff down. Hope you make the first cut!

I think the medical terminology and phlebotomy are good ideas. A few more ideas are get your CNA and work in a nursing home for the semester to get a little experience and it may help on a resume. Or you could take a Spanish class if you don't know it already. Any idea what you hope to specialize in might be some extra classes that are helpful.

I was accepted to my school as an alternate last semester thankfully I only had to wait approx 3 weeks to find out if I was accepted or not. I wasn't but then I got into this Fall Semester. Hopefully you will also!

Does your school offer Pharmacology or Pathophysiology courses that you can take prior to entering the program? If so, I would recommend getting a head start on those (or even taking them at another school if you can). I took these classes at a local CC while waiting for my admissions decisions and I'm very glad I did. These two courses can be two of the most difficult within nursing curriculum, added to the fact that you have to understand the concepts and content very thoroughly.

Good luck!

I'd suggest Medical Terminology or Pharmacology. Those would help you with the Nursing Classes!

If you are goning into a 2-year program, there may be additional prereqs for your BSN. You could start working on those. If you haven't already taken nutrition, first aid and nursing math, those may also help. Get your CNA and work at a hospital. I know it helped me a great deal. So did First Responder through the Red Cross.

does your school offer an assessment class?

no they don’t offer an assessment class. that would be great though. wonder if i could find a class online?

any idea what you hope to specialize in might be some extra classes that are helpful.

spanish would be good since we have a lot of spanish speaking people in our area. i will have to check and see if they offer it. i think i would really like to work in the er. i rather like chaos. i worked as an alcohol and drug counselor for 9 years plus 7 in a juvenile treatment center. i don’t think i could work a normal boring job anymore.

does your school offer pharmacology or pathophysiology courses that you can take prior to entering the program?

they do offer a pharm course with medical assisting, but it is not the same as the nursing one. they won’t let me into any nursing courses period. i can take medical term under the medical assisting course as well.

i really hope and pray i get in. i really appreciate all the encouragement. it can be rather frustrating watching younger kids getting accepted when half will drop out or flunk out because it is too hard. however i will get off my pity pot and keep fighting until i get in.

If I had not gotten into the program this month, then my next class that I was going to take was a pathophysiology class and some other lower level courses that I would need (and could take at comm college level) to apply to my BSN. Good luck on getting in this semester!

How about EMT class? I took it over a semester. To become a paramedic takes longer. You can't make much money as an EMT-basic but the experience can't be beat especially if you want to work in the ER.
