Typical career progression?

I am really, really green. I am just starting my pre-requ.s and I'm a non-trad. 2nd career student (currently a systems analyst).

What's the most likely scenario for what I'll do when I graduate and then beyond? I will get my ADN, then I do already want to get my BSN as well. Will I probably work at a hospital when I graduate and have to work shifts? (Is that all that new grads can get, and will I also want that experience?)

After that, what do RNs typically do...supervise, become specialists? Get a masters? Stay with bedside nursing and enjoy some seniority perks (are there any?)? I've seen some things about diabetes educators/program coordinators and that looks interesting to me.

If you just want to share your so far (or planned) career path, that would be helpful. I'm curious.

I think there are a lot of different paths available to you after you get your RN; that's what makes it such a good profession for all different kinds of people who are very different from each other in terms of personality, strengths, etc. For me personally, I'm also a non-traditional student who's starting an accelerated Master's program in May. I know that I want to work on Mental Health, so I'll be a Mental Health NP when I graduate. If you don't know exactly what you want to do, there are so many things open to you to try. That's one of the things that makes nursing great!
