trouble pronoucing some medical words

I am having trouble pronouncing some medical words. I want to be able to hear how they are pronounced and then I can go ahead and sound them out. Can anyone help on where I can go to listen recordings of how medical words are pronounced? thanks

Try www.webster.com After you type in the word, click on the "medical" button. Then there are mini speakers next to the word, click on it to hear the word pronounced.

Taking Medical Terminology right now. If you have and iPod and twenty bucks iTerms is good.

Medical terms are taken from Latin. The pronunciation could be causes some of the issues. Another problem is the length of some medical words. What I have found helpful is hearing the words over and over. There are audio sets available :smokin:which provide the medical word, its definition, and then an audio pronunciation of the medical term.

Go to a bookstore and find a medical terminology book with a cd-rom. It really helps to have the words broken down into their parts because a lot of the parts are used over and over. Especially the surgical suffices like -rraphy or -centesis.

Depends on the word. Try searching on dictionary.com and then click on the little speaker symbol next to the word. If it's a med you're having problems with, some drug books spell out the names phonetically for you.

That's something I'm really worried about too. When I worked at a medical clinic, I said "hepatologist" (still sure I'm saying it wrong in my head as I type this), and the doctor I was talking to said "Ahaha! That's cute!" :p She's super nice though, and I poked fun back at how she can't spell ankle (she always spells it "ankel"). I think a lot of my trouble comes from being fluent in French as well because I still can't for the life of me say "contribute" right and everytime I say it in front of my mom she says "Frenchie!" because it's said differently, the emphasis is on a different part of the word. I even pause to think about before saying it and still get it wrong. Oh well :) I'm sure dictionary.com will be a lifesafer for me too.

It doesn't help that some words are pronounced differently depending on where a person goes to school! I had an instructor in Indiana who was from Georgia....she pronounced alveoli to rhyme with ravioli!

That's not how you say it? I can't figure out how else you would say it.

Al-vee-oh-lie; in Latin suffix plurals the -lus (short 'u' sound) turns into -li (with a long 'i' sound).

When I come across something I can't pronounce I just google "Pronounce: whateverword" it works most of the time..And the more you do it you will find it becomes easier.

I would assume the reason most instructors put so much stress on proper spelling is due to credibility. If your documentation is scrutinized in front of a court room (blown up on a giant screen mind you) and you have misspelled a word, then you are not as credible. The other lawyer will say, "if you can't even spell it correctly then who is to say you even did it?"

That's just something to mull over.
