starting lines in nursing school

I'm curious, anyone actually learning to start lines and draw blood at some point in their nursing program? My school doesn't do it, they say you will be taught at the hospital that employs you. I dunno its the one big disappointment i have, oh well :o

We did a return demo in our 3rd semester for IV's. Then in my preceptorship I started 17 IV's, I was in a Day Surgery Unit. I'm SO thankful we do them. I'm super comfortable with it now.

You know, I really was intimidated by IVs before interning on a Med/Surg floor. Everyone gets an IV on the floor, so I got a lot of practice. Everybody misses. Most people that don't actually puncture the vein give up too easy. Sometimes you can spot the vein by feeling above and changing the angle without removing the needle. If you don't see the vein, don't make a run at it. Don't let it freak you out. It requires practice, and yea it hurts, but you can't give the meds. without the line.
