Setting myself up for failure!?!

Hi everyone. At 49 years of age I begin nursing school in the fall. I am sooooo nervous. First being out of school for so long, will I be able to concentrate and study again? And my most troublesome thing is what kept me from going to nursing school before is that my hands shake. Not because I'm nervous but it's just a hereditary thing. How will I ever start an IV? I'm so worried about this and this is actually what kept me from going to nursing school earlier--I would say to myself that i can't do this because my hands shake. I have my books, my student uniforms, etc. all set and I am so excited about the possibility of fulfilling my life-long dream but these concerns of mine are truly holding me back. I think I'm going to fail miserably. Egads!!!

Dazed and confused,

Suzy

Suzy! Yes you'll be able to study and focus. Trust me. I just graduated, and I'm 46. We have the advantage of maturity.

As far as the shaking, I have no idea. I would think it would depend on how bad it is. You could be stabilizing your hand against pt's arm or leg anyway. That might help

OHOHOH I am the expert on the shaking hands thing and nursing school worries. It runs in my family also, it's called essential tremor, and I would bet that is what runs in your family.I remember when my Mom was in nursing school about 10 years ago and she talked to her advisor about her hands constantly shaking, and it gets worse when you're nervous which is all you are in nursing school. Well the advisor didn't even know what to say about her hands except its worth a try. Now no playing because I am her daughter, she is 100% the best stick. Its a little nerve racking watching some shaking hands come towards you with a needle but her patients ask other nurses to go find her so she can stick them. Now that I'm going to be a nurse I am kinda agitated about it too, because the shaking never really affected anything I was doing and now it will, so I've been practicing on her and she showed me a trick to steady the shaking just so you don't worry a patient here or there or if your nerves are frazzled. I can't really remember which way she showed me right now, but I'll ask her later and post back if you think it would help you. You can do it though, don't worry, its great your going back to school!!

I am 42 and I don't have shaking hands but the worry about be able to study and memorize was a scarry to me. I started school for my prereqs in January and did pretty good ( 3 A's and 2 B's) I had to study alot and I do mean alot and it was hard I won't kid you about that, but I think that our age is an advantage, we have more life experiance and we have wanted this for a long time and if you are like me being a Mother and juggling kids and a job we are very good at figureing out how to get it all done.... Hope this helps you and Good Luck remember we are all here for you

I would LOVE to know of your mother's trick to steady the shaking hands. Sounds like your mom's got a good plan!
