Pre Nursing Student Help

Nursing Students General Students

I am still taking my prerequisites to gain entrance into the nursing program. I will be turning in my application at the end of fall semester this year. I don't know if this is how it is for every college, but mine is on the point system. They only look at Psychology, English, and Anatomy and Physiology 1, and then the TEAS test. I'm freaking out because I have a B in English and Psychology. My anatomy and physiology is next semester. Did any other students get Bs and still get accepted? Its highly competitive at my school. I still have 3 weeks to bring it up to As, but I just had my midterm today and I was so upset, and beating myself up over getting a B. My husband tries to tell me how awesome that is. He just doesn't understand the competitiveness of the program. Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hey! I can't help you but maybe you can help me. I'm wanting to go to school to become a nurse but took off a year due to family events. All I can really afford to do is community college and my schools program sounds JUST LIKE YOURS. I don't know if you had to do this to but I would have to get my CNA license to get in. I met with an advisor yesterday and she said that if I took a Nurse Aid 1 class and my A&P 1 class-4hrs that I would not have time to add anything else (like Gen. Psychology-3hrs, Critical Thinking-3hrs, and English/Writing and Inquiry-3hrs). Is there any advise/experience you can share?

It's not ideal, but it is possible. I had been thinking about nursing school for a while, but not too seriously. Some events (the very tragic death of a friend of mine and, 2 weeks later, the death of my mother from cancer) pushed me to finally do it. I already have a bachelor's so most of my prereqs were done. But in order to apply for this fall, I had to get my sciences and CNA done in short order. I was working a stressful 50 hour a week job as the only HR person at a small college (230 employees)- they didn't offer nursing at that school. On top of that I took A&P 1 on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at another school AND did my CNA classes all day on Saturdays and Sundays for 11 weeks. It was very hard and I had no time to do anything but eat and, occasionally, sleep... but I made it through. I wouldn't under any circumstances recommend doing it for more than one semester, but if you're dedicated and organized, you can make it through a semester. I will caution you that my health suffered a bit, but nothing lasting. That's why I strongly caution against more than one semester. Good luck to you!

I took a CNA class, anatomy 1, psychology, and an English class together. Also, I got all A's. I worked part time at a retail store as an assistant manager (25-30 hrs a week) It can be done, you also have to put a lot of work into it. My nursing program goes off of a points system also and is very competitive. We have a girl that got a C in anatomy II and a B in English who got it. Keep working towards those A's, they do make a difference. Good luck!!

Specializes in PCT, RN.

This is exactly how my school was, too.

If yours is point-based like ours is, you should be fine with a B in one of your courses as long as you do well on the TEAS.

Many schools value the TEAS score more than prereqs. Do extremely well on that and you should be fine. For instance I have 4.0 in prereq and overall with an 81 on TEAS and 100 hours volunteer at a hospital but was still on a waitlist. Some other people who did extremely well on the TEAS but didn't have straight A's got accepted immediately. Guess school's like great test takers to keep their NCLEX rate high. Either way, it seems like you aren't satisfied with B's and that's great but it doesn't hurt to try submitting an application with what you got. Good luck.
